Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

Make sure you file a complaint

I just had this issue pop up on my 2005 4Runner Lmtd with 102,000 on the engine. I've got Slyfox's kit on the way, but everyone needs to make sure to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The fact that Toyota is well aware of the defect, knows the likelihood of failure and going into limp mode, and issued a recall for other models is a little too much to stomach. Even if you've used a kit to bypass the issue, a complaint takes just a couple minutes to file online.

You're suggesting we should file complaint even if we evaded the issue by installing the SlyFox Bypass prior to failure?

Where did you read that a recall was issued by NHTSA on other models? A recall is mandated by the NHTSA. Besides this is not a safety related issue where your life could be in peril.
Toyota issued a "Goodwill" for this problem on several different models, just not ours...
What would be the cat's ass to find out is the percentage of problems they are seeing on the different models. The V8 4R has gotta be a very low % considering the huge majority of them were sold with the V6 engine.

Slyfox, super awesome. i had the codes come up and emailed him. Sent him the funds and bam it was at my door in no time. The instructions are clear, ran into some issues with my 4runner, other things going on. Slyfox even tried helping me though them as well. Awesome guy!

Cel

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, I saw this in a search. I have a 2007 4Runner with the 4.7l V8 check engine light, VSC trac, and Slip lights on. No sounds from engine or limp motor. These came on my highlander and i cleaned the oxygen sensors, I tried that with the 4Runner and it worked for a month but now they are back on. The codes I get are P1442, P1445, and P2441

I'll try to upload a pic.

What do I need to do to get the CEL lights out?

Those codes pertain to the AIS. Air Induction System. If you are mechanicly inclined it’s not that hard of a job at all. You can buy all the OEM parts on Amazon that you will need.
I have done several Sequoias over the last month for my customers. What I am finding is the plastic fins in the air pump are chipping off in small pieces. The little pieces then get into the AIS valves and causes them to get stuck in the open position. Hence the CEL coming on.

Thank you. I looked over the components and i'm positive i can figure it out and repair it, but i bought the bypass kit in hopes of an easier less time consuming fix. The power driver seat on this car needs attention too, It decided to fail in the reclined position. Whoever owned it before me spliced and rigged the wiring and i'm lost right now on that fix.

Let me know if you need any help or wiring diagram advice.

I'm at a roadblock with this seat! The recline is not functioning, the power forward /back and up/down works as does the lumbar support. I have retraced the exposed wires in every imaginal scenerio and nothing works. I did get the seat belt light to go on when seatbelt is fastened (backwards) other than that nothing works. I have a feeling the pigtail that is hanging maybe the key to the exposed wiring??? I have attached a few pic's maybe someone with experience can tell. I have found some used seats not sure if should just replace it. (2007 sport edition 4.7L) cloth/black.

I see you don't have enough posts yet to start your own topic, but you should choose a seat related topic to post your questions as this topic is about the Air Injection Pump and you most likely won't get many checking this topic that can help you out with your seat issue.

That being said, there's no photo at your link when I clicked on it, don't know if that's on my end or your link is not right.

Same here! Slyfox slayed the issue, Codes all clear and everything working great! Thank You!

Has anyone had p2445 come on AFTER installing the slyfox kit?
This has happened twice in the last 2 months, both time taking an exit off the highway the truck goes in limp mode, park and check its p2445.

While I've never heard of this happening, it is possible. The bypass does not defeat the "safety circuit"....which are pressure differential sensors who's purpose in life is to detect exhaust gases back flowing into the intake(think of it as a check valve....."checker"). My guess is you have a valve partially opened/closed that randomly trips one of those sensors. Plates would fix. Other possibility is you have a cracked/broken rubber hose that goes to those sensors and it generating this misinformation to ECU.......or I guess sensors could just be bad internally.

Mine just came back after no problems for 8 months after installing the full Hewitt Tech full bypass kit. Apparently it’s a known cold weather glitch. From what I’ve seen Toyota issued a calibration file that can be uploaded to the ECM to correct the problem. That was a few years ago and after doing that they apparently scrubbed that and told dealerships to instal a completely new system(of course, why not try to get a few thousand out of people when there is a simple fix). I’m going to my dealership tomorrow and HOPING they can figure out about the calibration file and go that route to get rid of the P2445 code, because I’m sure as hell not going to pay them a few thousand dollars for something they should have recalled years ago. If they don’t or won’t do the update to the ECM then I have no clue what I’ll do. My P2445 code didn’t pop until Wednesday while the wife was taking our son to school, first true cold day here for us.

@darkgun......do you have blockoff plates installed?
We have YEARS of running these bypasses with no reported issues like this.
The user above does not have plates. Curious if you put yours on.

Sure do. This is supposedly an issue where the ECM just decides “hey lets check the system” while driving and throws the code. The code didn’t come up originally this time on start up, I came up after my wife had driven a few miles and was sitting at the school in the parking lot after dropping our son off at school. It’s supposedly a “cold weather glitch”, and oddly enough it happened on our first real cold day of driving. I’m just hoping like hell the dealership can find the calibration file Toyota made a few years ago to correct this.

So what confuses me is the fact the bypass(Cant speak for Hewitt) only functions for a couple secs at startup......AND has nothing to do with the pressure sensors for the exhaust gas. There might be a glitch......but it should be a glitch regardless if bypass is installed or not. Seems to me like the issue is with the pressure sensors "freaking out" at random and sending crap data to the ECU which responds accordingly by putting you in limp mode.
The itsnotjon things sounds as if your are at decent speed......then let off gas as you exit to the off ramp....thus backpressure is high.....and could be leaking by a partially closed valve(my speculation given the data).

I drive the same route 6 days a week, it only happened twice since temps have dropped below 30. (both times it was below 30 outside.)
Should I let it be or..?
