Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

Bypasses (any of them)......do not negate/affect the pressure sensors that look at backflow exhaust.
-If your valves are stuck closed(or normal) you will not need plates.
-If your valves are stuck open....a lot of people can get them to close on their own and then install a bypass.
-If you are a "lucky one"(sarcasm inserted there) your valves are truly stuck open and will not close on their own. In this case you will need plates in order for the backpressure not to make it to the sensors. Much easier to do plates than remove manifold to clean valves.

The system only works for a few secs at startup....driving a few minutes and then hearing the sound is not the AIP system. It could be the backpressure you're hearing......but it's not the AIP pump running.

This is great news for me. thanks for the direct info.

what's the "fix" for stuck closed valves? about a year ago i threw P1442&P2441 at the same time--ever since i get P2445 often in the winter freezing weather only. been searching and searching for a smoking gun or a fix.

Possibly. I assumed my mityvac test cycled the valves shut, since the noise I mentioned didn't reappear until the beginning of the third drive cycle, so I thought perhaps the AIP system was still active and energized the VSVs to the air valves, opening them and getting them stuck again.

I'll begin installing the driver side plate at the valve assembly end after I finish this post. The original plan was to pull off and clean the valve assembly off to ensure they're completely shut, but that requires more crap to remove and an even bigger coolant spill than what I have now. I already removed the two bolts at the flange and have the tube somewhat loose, replacing the bolts with studs to simplify the plate installation.

New to me 08 4runner v8 owner

Not trying to change topics or hijack a thread but awaiting to build my post count. Is there a particular manufacturer of bypass module that works better than another. Looking for preventative plug and play before any issues arise with my new to me Low mileage 4th gen. Thanks,

A little over 8 hours/100 miles of engine running time since I installed the driver-side bypsass plate, no noise or codes so far.

Rutech or Hewitt if you want true plug and play. If you don't mind hard-wiring and have no codes yet, get Jeff's ( slyfox75 ) bypass module.

Thank for the info. I believe I will go with the Hewitt-Tech since I have a 08 and have heard other brands having issues with 08+ models.

@Slyfox

My truck is in the shop with a starter issue. My truck possibly came with this mod already installed, and I’ve had it 5yrs with no issues. Now my starter is acting up and they said there is a wire going to the starter relay and it’s backfeeding the starter not allowing it to start the truck. They told me they cut the wire and now it’s starting fine. (Why they cut the wire, I have no ****ing idea...). Anyways, when I get back to the truck, could I submit pictures and see which kit I have? I bought it from a forum member so he may have bought your kit. But I want to make sure it’s installed properly especially since they cut a damn wire.

Deputy.....yeah, just send me your pics to jeffcolemaps at gmail and I'll hook you up. These should not no affect on your starter if installed properly but yes I will help you determine what you have and where we need to go from here to get you fixed up.

I was hesitant and warned folks with 08 and even some 09 models about the potential for issues due to Hewitt Tech issues reported.
Those people have reported back no issues(I've purposely reached out to them months later to confirm). Some of those are GX owners as well.
My assumption is there was a change to the US built vehicles(Tundra/Seq) that drove the idea of 08-09 wont work unless you look at coolant temp as well(the change Hewitt did for those models).....as we have not seen the issue on the 4R or GX on those years. JUST MY ASSUMPTION given the limited data I have.

Installed a hewitt-tech on my 07 about 5 months ago. So far so good; definitely happy. Curious about passing emissions next time? Will this keep me from passing the emissions test?

I installed your kit onto the '08 4.7 4Runner, still working fine, been in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada towing since install.

Sweet kit, just do it.

I was actually one of the 08 GX owners who had to return my RuTech in mid-2015 bc of the reflash issues throwing a code. I'll hit you up Jeff once it gets warmer and order a kit.

Thank you!

Chatted with Rutech on their bypass. Asked them if the blocking plates were necessary if I was only installing the bypass and the system hadn't failed yet. Rutech said the plates are still necessary as gasses will circulate back into the engine without them... if the valves haven't frozen open, how is that possible? Are they saying this just to cover their butts?

Seems that if system is still operational, simply disabling the pump via the bypass module should be all that is necesary.

Any credence to Rutech's claim?

Please don't take anything Rutech says as factual. He did not design what he is selling and his units are made in China regardless of what he claims. He simply sells them and does not understand how the system actually operates.

So I had this issue with my 05 gx 470 with the pump being stuck and the relay a? po418 or whatever. I ordered the rutech off ebay for 200 and saw I also needed the pump proxy kit, I called Hewitt and they said rutech copied them and it should work together just fine? Can anyone concur?

I ordered a AIP bypass kit from Jeff Coleman (slyfox75) for $48 from this site. He sent me email confirmations. I installed it in my wife's GX470. It took less than 15 minutes to do and it was silly easy to do! No need for "plug-and-play" kits. Anyway, my CEL went away and no more AIP problems! Thanks Jeff!

Is it true that the bypass causes more problems then its worth on the 2008 V8?

I don't know, but I believe I'm having issues with my Rutech as I've been hearing my pump kick on when I start the 4R lately. And here I thought the Rutech was supposed to completely keep it off when the 4R starts. I'm also wondering if it is linked to the starter in any way as I've been having issues with my 4R not turning over right away. It's VERY hit or miss. I installed the Rutech before pump failure so I may take it out along with the plates and see if my starting issue keeps up. If it does then I'll swap the starter. Weird because I get more issues after going thru water. Nailed it down to starter, Rutech failure (since my pump is also turning on, which it shouldn't), or possibly the parking switch. Things that make you go hmmmmm
