Seized?

I have a problem. I have a 2002 4runner
And it was running good with regular oil changes and maintenances
One night after a day of driving i got back into my truck and started it but as soon as i started it it shut off tried starting it again and no luck it wont turn over so i checked the battery and had the starter tested both came back good next i pulled the spark plugs and tried turning the motor by hand and it did not even budge so im stuck and any help would be very helpfull thAnks

So, you used a big ratchet to try and turn it clockwise, with all the spark plugs out....and got no where?

If that is indeed the case, I think you might be correct in your assumption.

Did it make any noise that made you suspect, before it did what it did?

i used a breaker bar, just followed the steps in a repair manual for starter motor testing in vehicle. Before this happend everything was fine, no strange noise correct oil level, water and yeah gas. I don't understand why this happend, it didn't overheat or anything.
 
Fuel, oil and water okay, no strange noise when it stopped running... hmmm. You are trying to turn it with the crank bolt right? At the bottom in the middle of the big pulley? When the engine stopped did it stop abruptly or did it sound like it shut off normally? I can't believe the engine is seized or stuck and made no noises. Your truck is an 02 so it's an auto trans, it is in park right?
 
Take your belts off and try rotating the crank again. This will ensure that its not just an accessory that's locked up. Ive seen a locked up ac compressor stop a tuning motor and not let it crank over till we cut the belt and it fired right up. Could also be a broken timing belt. How old is it?

i used a big breaker bar to try and turn the motor clockwise at the crank bolt but no luck. Next i will take off the accessories belts. i checked the timing belt and its still in place!

Park would be the same as neutral. Even in Drive I would think it would turn but may have a little added resistance. I doubt much since turning it with a bar is so slow. Since you already took the starter off to be tested it can't be that possibly stuck engaged to the flywheel so I'm out of ideas except to dig further into the engine. If you tear down the front end to get to the timing belt and take it off you can see if your cams still turn freely. Hopefully one of the guys here thinks of what hasn't been said yet...
 
Pull the valve covers and check for something FUBAR'd in the valvetrain that could be preventing the rotating assembly from spinning. If that all checks out it's probably time to pull the oil pan and check the bottom end (you could pull the oil filter and check for metal shavings as an interim step).
 
i took off the timing belt cover and looks like there is a lot of corrosion build up it's the same color as the coolant rite where the head and the engine block meet, i guess it's leaking from the head gasket? someone told me it is probably hydro lock? he said that maybe some coolant got into one of the cylinders and seized it. (idk)
 
This just does not sound right. Siezing usually involves fast moving metal pieces that slam to a halt. I cannot imagine this happening without a lot of noise.
 
If you pulled the plugs and there wasn't any fluid in the cylinders, it wouldn't be hydro locked (and even if it had, you should still be able to turn it after taking the spark plugs out).

I suppose it is possible a leaky head gasket caused some kind of problem (seized tensioner, water pump, or something similar).
 
No matter what gear the transmission is in the engine WILL turn over if it's an automatic.

Drain oil- if it's hydro locked water will have drained into oil by now, If it's a blown head gasket then your oil should look like milky gloop. Is the coolant low/overfilled, look shiny like it has oil in it?

Tried rotating with plugs out yet?

Take it counter clockwise, worst you can do is loosen the crank bolt.

Soory to say it but if those don't work out, I'm thinking timing belt that jumped a tooth. NOT GOOD! Bent valves, that's what would be stopping the piston from reaching TDC right now, that's why I say try counter clock wise.

How many miles on the engine?

Just an FYI, normally that would be a very bad thing, but luckily the 3.4 is a non-interference motor so the valves can't be bent if the TB skips or breaks. It's always nice to know for piece of mind.

X2, Non interference engine :)

I know first hand what happens in an interference engine. Working on that issue right now on our 92 Stanza. Probably pulling the head this weekend to see if the pistons are fubar or not.
Our first and last Nissan.
I love our Toyotas!
