Sell or Part out???

I'm not good at this but I would think a clean (who cares about that little fender dent) well maintained 97 with 158k miles would bring at least $6,000, probably more. It helps its a texas truck with no rust for sure...

I don't think most buyers would really care about the salvage title especially when you can show them why it was salvaged. Someone is going to buy this rig and use it, I wouldn't care about the title issue.

Wait, are the pics you posted AFTER the accident? I see like very little damage

Yes. The drivers side fender is damaged and the gap between it and the good is wider than the other side. The headlight on the driver's side is also " rigged" in there. It is aligned good but the plastic bracket the light mounts to busted.

Yeah, I was gonna say....
Why was that even claimed on insurance?
It's a frickin fender (and headlight). 20 minute bolt on parts from a scrap yard.
It's plain white too, so you can even do a rattle can paint job and people would really have to look to tell the difference... or just do nothing with it...it's still one of the straighter 4Runners around.

What was that rancher looking to do by claiming it, if he knew he was in full fault? It just screws with you more.

Pity you can't UN-claim something.

I'm always hoping (not really, but still) that I'll get rear ended lightly so I have an excuse to replace my rear bumper which is definitely dinged in a lot of places. With my luck, though, they'll just total the entire car because apparently that's easier somehow.

You should have it totaled, then buy it back, and I'll come pick it up from you for $200 over buy-back price and a few beers.

Yeah it was BS that it was considered totaled. I was out of town and not involved with it at the time other than over the phone with my wife. I wasn't at all happy when I found out it would need to get a salvage title if we wanted to keep it. I had my wife ask if we could get another estimate and she was told no. We were paid whatever they considered it to be worth minus what they wanted for it in order for us to keep it. So the insurance company is done with, it's ours.

I'm no insurance pro, but I've heard from my dad (who works at Firestone, so he sees his fair share of vehicle wrecks and insurance claims) that you're much better off NOT going with the shop that the insurance company recommends. They will always jack the prices up extremely high, which will almost always result in a 'totaled' status. Just do a quick Google search for shop with good reviews. Really ANY shop, as long as YOU call them and ask, and don't have the insurance company do it for you.
My wife got rear ended in her 03 Rav4 a few years back, and my Dad recommended a well-rated buddy instead of the shop that Progressive Insurance recommended. Not only was the car fixed well, but we got a free rental for a week, and when we went to pick it up, he gave us $200 that insurance OVERPAID on. He could have just pocketed it, and we never would have known.

I agree totally. My wife essentially got railroaded in the deal. She knows better now though.

I'm in SA how much for the whole truck after you get the insurance $ I'll either strip it all down or fix it. I can always use extra parts.

Didn't seen the damage pics.. can you send me some?

Did you already settle with the insurance company? (Meaning, did you receive a check, and sign off on the liability?)

If not, you have options.

Obviously, this is not part-out material. Keep it, just know that the insurance check is to compensate for the loss of value due to being a salvage title.

No, she settled with the insurance company almost immediately. After they took out the cost of "keeping" the 4Runner we got very little back from them. I'm gonna loose money no matter what, because of all the upgrades and parts I have in it. I know that, I just need to make good on my end of the deal and get rid if it.

Your insurance company lied to you. You're allowed to take it to another shop for an estimate. I just went through this with my GF's Subie. This truck should have never been totaled or gone through insurance. Now it's worth less because of the salvage title for a few cheap bolt on parts. Sorry man. I'd keep it.

The calf owner's farm and ranch insurance lied to her, our insurance was never involved. And no keeping it for me, it has to find a new home
