I actually went from a 2008 Platinum Sequoia to a 2014 4 Runner. The Sequoia was awesome, but it drove really big. It's the same chassis as my Tundra, but felt much larger overall. It had the magnetic shocks but still had significant body roll, far more than the XREAS 4 Runner. The gas mileage was okay on the highway (stock rims/tires), but city driving was terrible. Not quite as bad as my current tundra but thats strictly because of my wheel selection.
My wife hated driving it which is why we downsized to the 4 Runner. We had the 7 person seating in the Sequoia which is miss, but opted out of with the 4 runner because it eats up the entire back area.
Once thing that never makes sense to me is the $25,000 premium you pay over the Tundra. Overall if we needed a giant SUV that I felt would never break I would definitely go look at one again once they remodel.

My bad, I assumed they were magnetic shocks. It's "Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) with Gas Shock Absorbers"

The Sequoia was great on the highway and with the family in tow (5 of us) it was amazing for road trips and ski trips. The gas mileage was absolutely horrible though, and even though my wife absolutely loved driving it all over the place - 45,000km the first year (lots city) I got rid of it as it was just such a gas pig.
The 4Runner gets better mileage, but definitely has a different feel to it than the Sequoia. I prefer the Sequoia if it wasn't for the fuel economy, although I think my 80 series LC is even worse...

None of those are accurate. Fill the tank, reset the meter, drive until you need to refill. Fill the tank again and divide my miles driven. That is the only way to get a reasonably accurate number. Which will be a lot closer to 17 mpg than 22 mpg.

I personally wouldn't ever shop a 4Runner v seq. one is a much smaller made in Japan mid sized suv selling in high volumes and the other a full sized suv made in USA that's not competing all too well against the GM options.
Both are fantastically reliable, durable with the 4Runner being the high quality ride. I find the seq interior to be seriously dated and Americanized for my liking esp at its $60k price for the top shelf version.

The Sequoia is nice, but I haven't really felt they're worth the time now that the second gens are IFS and IRS. The Tahoes are nice and while I'm a bit hesitant about their engines (GM and others have been having issues with that variable displacement stuff...) they look very nice inside and out.
I drive a 13 SR5 and the wife drives an 11 Sequoia.
At one point we planned on swapping vehicles and I used hers as my daily driver. LOTS more room and power with the Sequoia, but handles like a barge compared to the 4Runner. Unfortunately, the only other options are Tahoe/Suburban (drives and looks much better in my opinion, but the reliability sucks-electrical gremlins) or the Expedition (another dated platform). As others have suggested, I might hold off on a new one budget permitting. If you do buy used, avoid the white paint like the plague as it is the worst paint ever. In summary: a dependable, large, powerful vehicle that I don't find any joy in driving compared to the Runner.

FWIW I also looked hard at the Sequoia prior to getting my 15 Limited. I liked everything about it, but my wife did not like the way it drove...... she said it felt twice as big and cumbersome as her 2001 Yukon that she had been driving for almost 15 years. She fell in love with the T4R on the first test drive. Guess who won the debate

We have both a 2010 4Runner and my wife drives a 2008 sequoia, she likes it. It is no where near as reliable as the 4Runner imo. The tundra and sequoia platform have had issues with the water pumps, and brake rotors seem to always warp? I guess they are so much larger, must be a lot harder on the brakes. We also had electrical issues with our sequoia, the entire dash computer system was replaced under warranty. Stuff happens,but in comparison to the 4 runner we have had no issues at all. Both are paid off, so we will keep driving them, but for years I begged my wife to trade it off for a better made, better gas mileage Toyota vehicle. We get 14mpg, the best we ever got was 17 on all hwy driving at 65 mph. It really gets mostly crappy mpg's.
