Sequoia in the 4Runner stable?

Sorry if this is of topic, actually, I'm pretty sure it is but I thought I'd give it a go. You see, you guys have been VERY helpful with just about everything we've ever posted regarding my son's 4Runner. Now, I am considering the purchase of a '14 Sequoia Limited with only 36K. I've registered with two Sequoia forums and have posted asking for general advice but have gotten ZERO responses. Hopefully, you guys will have atlas some information for me. Here goes: Basically, our Odyssey finally kicked the can and we are in a real need for a replacement vehicle right away. We have ALWAYS wanted a Sequoia and the one recently described just became available, the day after our Odyssey died. We have next to no time to research, in fact, we're driving 1.25 hours away to see it tomorrow. Can anyone advise in anyway> Are the Sequoias just as reliable as the 4Runners? Anything we should be checking for?

So to give you a reply, I have no experience with Sequoia's per se, I do know a gentleman that has a first gen one that is still running super strong and looks great for being a vermont vehicle. I have many friends that have Tundras which is what yours is based off of, they absolutely love their trucks! the one thing they don't love is the mileage. Just expect to get about 13 mpg. Otherwise, look for all the normal stuff, damage, leaks, etc. but being a Toyota it should certainly last for another 200k with good maintenance. good luck!
 
Looked at the 2017 Sequoias out of curiosity when looking at 4Runners.
Was much surprised to see that It was made 50% in turkey and think the other half was made in Canada.
Not sure about the year your looking at or anything else about them except they do look nice. Good luck in your search.
 
I have no personal experience with them however I have 3 fiends that have them and all have over 100K miles (2 first gens, one second gen) and all 3 running strong with no major repairs needed. I considered a 1st gen but decided on the 4 runner, i'm not a huge fan of the looks of the second/current gen (just my preference).

Sequoia is very nice...it is an enlarged 4runner with independent rear suspension.

IMHO, i would save up and go for holy grail of Toyota SUV...the Land Cruiser. Land Cruiser frame and quality are a notch above 4runner/Sequoia.
 
I would echo the statements here. I have several friends who drive Sequoias and love them. They don’t hold their value as well as a LC or 4Runner, but are solid trucks. I almost bought one, but it was a bit bigger than we needed. I don’t think you’d be disappointed. Good luck!

Thanks to all who replied. My father has a first gen Sequoia and my son has a 3rd gen 4runner, and, we've spent a lot of time noticing 2nd gen sequoias on the road. With that being said, we had no idea just how much we would appreciate it in person. This used '14 with 36K had a far superior ride than a brand new Tahoe and/or suburban. The fit & finish on this 4 year old Sequoia was in a league of it's own compared to brand new Ford & GM SUV's. Needless to say, we took it home so the 4Runner now has a stable mate it can be proud of!
 
i don't own a sequoia, but I did own a 12 tundra, and yeah, I LOVED THAT TRUCK.

It never broke down, and i took that thing everywhere.

I traded it in for a 4runner, but apart of me still wish I had my tundra. I got rid of it, was because the interior was really dated, and I moved into the city where the tundra was too much of a beast.


If the sequoia is anything like the tundra, you will like it.
 
Im sure you'll love the ownership experience.

I looked around in a Limited Seq model once when i had my T4R in for scheduled maintence. i was completely shocked at how nice it was, and the interior size with the captains chairs was wonderful. It was a pure land-yacht.

If i had to do all over again, aside from the fact that i have discovered off-roading with my Runner, i would at least have looked and test drove the Seq with the Rnnr before buying.

To learn that they share the same V8 with the Tundra & LC, they have the same chassis and build as the Tundras...im sure it would have lasted a solid 200K and more as a family hauler and winter storm beast.
 
Personally if I were in the market for a Sequoia I'd look at a Land Cruiser. It basically depends how much you are looking to spend.

To answer your question, Sequoias are a good platform and if you can get it for the price you want it for it will suit you well. My dads tundra is bulletproof. Anything we've thrown at it the Tundra performs.

I always ask people who are looking at Sequoias why they don’t check out a LC. If you’re spending that kind of money you might as well get one. Better build quality, better aftermarket support and best of all built in Japan.
 
The Sequoia is more than adequate. You're replacing an Odyssey, if that worked for you for this long then a Sequoia will be plenty. The Land Cruiser would arguably be overkill and less spacious.

Btw, an LC starts at 85k, and a Sequoia Limited is around 60k.

Just last month, i went to Toyota...the salesman EASILY went down to $75k even without negotiating! I was there with my brother who is interested in it...we passed on it that day.

the iforce v8 and that transmission combo is something toyota got right. It accelerates like crazy and is bullet proof reliable. I literally entertained buying a used 2 door base model, 2 wheel drive tundra just to supercharge it, and turn it into a mini truck.
