The V-6 does have a serpentine belt aka (Accessory Drive Belt). It drives the A/C compressor, alternator, water pump/Radiator fan, and the power steering pump. It is turned by the crank pulley at the very bottom front of the engine. There is no replacement mentioned in the maint. handbook, but every 3-4 years is not a bad idea. It is relatively cheap and a quick DIY item.
It also has a Timing Chain also. And you are correct they normally do not need replacement for the life of the engine.
The V-8 also has a serpentine belt and it drives the same items listed above.
The V-8 has a Timing Belt which requires replacement every 90k miles since the 4.7L is an *Interference Engine*. If it were to break the pistons will hit the valves and cause a very costly repair.
If the serpentine belt breaks in either case it is not a huge deal. You may be stuck on the side of the road because if you continue to drive you will overheat the engine very quickly.:biggrin2:

use a socket that will fit the bolt in the center of the pulley and a breaker bar or 1/2 inch drive socket wrench. Then push or pull it either way until you see the tension release. It is easiest with 2 people. 1 to hold the breaker bar and 1 to put the belt off and on. You do not crack the bolt or nut loose.

The tensioner is to the right side of the fan. Just locate the alternator pulley on the right side (while standing in front of the engine) and you'll see a pulley just to the left of it. It's the one underneath that pulley.
Sorry if that's confusing. I'll post a diagram for you in a minute.
One other thing I forgot to mention-- there's a hole in the tensioner bracket that you can use to hold the tensioner in an "open" position while you swap out your belt. You can use something small like the end of an allen wrench to stick in the hole to keep the tensioner pulley open.

I just recently replaced my serpentine belt on my 2007 4Runner, and now I have a "ticking" sound when I start up my car; it only happens for a few minutes while i am warming up my car. I checked to see is the new belt is binding or hitting anything , but nothing...Any clue or suggestions?!?!??
