setting the timing

its 1990 3.0 I have lined up the camshafts with the marks on the plate, and I have lined up the mark on the crank , pointed the distributor to #1. runs for a second then just cranks, If you wait a few seconds start again it rans a second again.
A toyota mechanic was saying there are some timing marks under the valve covers. I think he is full of shit, unless you can go wrong with themarks on the plate.
I really dont think anyone will answer this anyway, you guys seemed to be concerned with japanese head lights and clear taillights.

hey brother, no need to bash us; we are all here for our t4rs helping each other out, and im sorry if you cant find the answer you were looking for, but it isnt our fault. no need for sarcasm. as for timing marks on the vavle covers i have no idea, but i would trust a toyota tech, especially if i didnt know. happy holidays.

Is your mass air flow sensor plugged in, because that`s what it sounds like. The engine runs of the cold start injector until it cuts out.

thanks, I was thinking that. I am assuming the mass airflow sensor is hooked to the air cleaner. We had that hooked up too. However the Hose going from the throttle body to the aircleaner is destroyed and not hooked up. A mechanic has told us the fuel injectors are set for specific sides. My buddy had put them in and wasnt aware of this.

well it was the mass air flow. since i had the snorkle off, I put a screw driver to open the vane of it. and ran pretty good.

Timing 3vz-E v6

Hey guys, love my new 95 4Runner. I've loved all my Toyotas. Leaky water pump got me more familiar with it than I had planned. Had some offers to fix it, but every one's all short of cash these days. Besides, we need to get to know each other.
So I'm all the way through, new pump on,new timing belt to be installed. The cams are upright and on the marks, ditto for the crank.
A note here, since the damn UPS guy still hasn't shown up with my snap on tool, I had to remove the tensioner. I had heard how tough the A/C bracket was but I pulled the power steering pump and the bracket ahead of the fan mount where the tensioner is mounted and thats all. The fan mount then pulled out pretty easy. There was an upright bracket off the compressor, but it slid past with just a rub. You will need a vise to compress the tensioner. Hurry up snap- on
Ok the timing belt. I slip it on white lines up on the cams first. The span is good teeth in groove. Down around the pump and crank I can't pull out the slack I need. I get it on and unpin the tensioner and give it a few cranks around by hand. DAMN white marks have skipped teeth and we get to try again. Bottom line now I'm starting from zero. I think I need two turns on the crank for each one on the cam. Can I just reset my cam marks to the 12:00 notch? Anybody help me get back to TDC, assume all gears out of line by now.

I have shared some tips about the timing belt and distributor timing. note my problems might not be the same exact as yours but you might find some help. esp with the tensioner and the timing belt. hope this helps.
