Hello everyone,

I am fairly new to both 4Runners and this forum. I have a pretty unique situation. About 6 months ago i purchased a 1986 4runner with a 1992 22re engine with a manual transmission. It has been my daily driver ever since, and i have been loving it. I have however, been running into a few problems.

Quick note on previous issues. About a month or two after getting my 4runner the head gasket blew and i had to replace it. I would like to thank everyone for all the great threads on this forum about the head gasket issues. They were all very helpful.

My current issue, well issues are, after replacing the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, and PCV valve the engine has been shaking quite aggressively (this causes the stick shift to shake as well) especially at idle. Prior to replacing the items listed above, I was getting a much higher than normal idle rpm (which has calmed down to around 900 rpm now) and i was getting a popping sound (kinda like popcorn) from the engine compartment right after pressing down on the clutch while driving. Once the engine made it back down to idle the popping typically would stop. This problem was Not fixed after replacing the items above. And now just recently there is a raspy sound coming from the engine. This sound is hard to explain. Also, it sometimes is a little rough on start up.

Another quick note, after replacing the head gasket, i wasn't really able to set the timing correctly. I'm pretty sure it is a little off. Due to having a 92 engine in an 86 body the wiring is a little odd to say the least, and i have been unable to find a way to set the timing correctly.

So, to sum it all up, my engine is quite shaky, i am experiencing a popping sound, a raspy kind of sound, and my timing is probably off.

Any help would be great!

Many Thanks

The last tiime my 22RE was running idling rough and making a popping sound it was a bad exhaust valve. Try pulling spark plugs, and if you pull one and it doesn't get worse then you know you've got something wrong on that cylinder.

What to do the spark plugs look like? They can tell you a lot about what your motor is doing.

The 92 motor still has a physical distributor, right? If so, the timing is what it is. Jump the test port to take out the advance from the computer and set to -5 btdc.
