If you don't mind me asking how did you do on the trade of your 2002 4Runner? I bought a 2015 TE and have a 2002 that I am getting ready to sell. Thought about trading it in. Still driving the 2002 to work and only have around 220 miles on the new one.

The dealer got a steal.

The trouble is here in Denver the Trails are usually spoken for before they even get off the truck. They had the exact Attitude Black Trail I wanted coming in on a truck from Long Beach 4 days after I started looking and test drove an LE, SR5 and the one Trail (Silver) they had on the back lot (it still had the plastic wrap on it).

They lowballed me big time the first offer and I said "Here is the number. Come back with yes or I am walking out the door". They said yes.

My 2002 was cherry. And I mean cherry. 115K miles. Everything done correctly from timing belt at 90k miles to new DBA rotors, new drums on back, shocks, etc.. And not one door ding. Interior like new. Never smoked in, etc... I do all my own maintenance and buy the good stuff, not the cheapest.

I sold it to them for $5500. I am certain I could have sold it for at least $8K myself and probably more like $9K to the right buyer (the guy looking for a really well maintained vehicle) but I don't have a lot of spare time and just didn't want to hassle with it.

My 3rd gen never hit the lot. I am certain somebody at the dealership bought it. Probably the day I traded it in.

My advice to you would be if your 3rd gen is clean, price it fairly but firmly and you will find a buyer.

Edit: I should have noted - I had a couple neighbors say "Damn, I wish I would have known I'd have bought it without blinking" but I have a firm rule: I never sell a car to anybody I know because the odds are they aren't going to baby it the way I did and the last thing I want to see is something I pampered being run into the ground.

I sold a car to a friend of a friend back in the early 80's. It was pristine and he harped on me for a couple of months to please sell it to him.

I saw the car at his house a year later and it was completely trashed. It upset me and I decided then, never again. Out of sight, out of mind. ;-)

Thanks - Have a very nice 2002 4Runner that was originally a CA and NV car until I bought it 5 years ago. No rust on the undercarriage at all and only 109k. All maintenance done and would like to get 7.5-8k for it and was wondering if I was in the right price range. FYI - I paid 35,800 for my new Trial with Nav and KDSS.

If it's really clean and no rust I would start a bit higher.

I have been regretting what I let mine go for but as I said, I just didn't want to dick around with it.

The 3rd gen's are strong sellers and since you are in a position to wait it out a bit I would do so. Just my .03 (.02 adjusted for inflation).

LOL. #1 Blitz Rule: NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY including me eats in my vehicles. No eating, no drinking, no smoking and absolutely no drunk people (puke is really tough and disgusting to clean up).

Ah well, I love my truck but I like quiet children on long drives even more. My sanity is more important than my truck being spotless.
