Shifter Locked in Park

Went to the dealership today to get the shift-lock situation looked at. Basically, it was a blown fuse. Unfortunately, after they found and replaced the fuse it happened again as I was trying to leave the dealership. Anyway, they tried to replicate it and it hasn't happened again. I picked up a couple extra fuses in case it happens while I'm on the road.

I wish I knew what gremlin was causing this, or if it is just a weird anomaly (that happened twice in a 12hr period). It's not confidence building in a car that I'm normally very confident in.
 
At the dealership, did they look at the sensors to see if any were damaged? Something similar happened to my 4Runner back in April and it was a bad sensor. Replacing the fuse was a temporary fix, but I needed a new sensor.

It sounds like the issue I dealt with was a bit different, but it might be worth a try.
 
They said they looked at the sensors but didn't find anything. I'm definitely interested so I'll press the issue more if it happens again. I'll keep you guys posted.

Which fuse did they replace?

I don't have the owner's manual or FSM handy to verify for the 4Runner, but typically the shifter lock is tied to the brake light fuse so if you have no brake lights you can't shift out of park. Sometimes a short circuit in the vehicle side of the trailer wiring harness will pop the brake fuse repeatedly causing a problem like yours. Have you done any sort of electrical modifications to the brake light circuit or are there any signs of damage or corrosion on the trailer wiring harness underneath the truck? Try wiggling the harness while someone holds the brake on and see if the fuse pops again.

Hi Nate, the sensor is called the neutral safety switch, but the dealership said it was unique to the TE, so it is probably a different issue for you.

One thing to keep in mind is what [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] relayed to me: a pinched sensor could look ok, but there could still be damage.

96r50, yes your intuition is correct. It was the fuse for the brake lights. The dealer did mention my brake lights were out and also said they looked for electrical mods I may have done to the truck since I have a few visible mods. So, I'm hoping it was something simple and won't repeat.

I have towed on many occasions but hadn't towed in a few thousand miles prior to the fuse going out. I haven't made any mods to the lights or harness. I will check it out for corrosion, especially since
I've been driving around in Salt City.

I have the same problem!

I can pump the brakes to get the ABS and traction control lights off, but they come back.

That little motor noise is driving me crazy.
 
This is kind of an older post but I ran into this problem just now. I was checking my fuses to see if they were blown since I have a brake light out (not the entire tail light). I mistakenly put the fuse in the incorrect location which caused the lock up. So…maybe check if your STOP 10A fuse is in the correct spot lol
