shifter stuck in park

99 4runner limited automatic with e locker

Went to the store tonight and my shift lever would not come out of park. The button would not depress. I lifted the cover near the shifter and moved the plastic button and that unlocked the shifter. Once unlocked it worked fine until I put it back into park at home and it was stuck again. No problems with the key in ignition so that is not any part of the issue.

I read that it might have something to do with the brake lights but they are working fine. Any ideas or suggestions? I did poke around the forum but did not find any helpful information.

Just a thought but check your brake lights. If the fuse blew for some reason then it wont activate the shift lock solenoid allowing you to get out of park. I have seen this happen a few times.

Thanks guys for the input. The links did help! For some reason my searches don't seem to find many posts with any help.

On another note my problem went away when I started her up this morning. For some reason though it seems like this problem may rear its ugly head again, but now I am not in the dark.

I pinched my trailer wiring offroad and it popped the brake fuse.
Same deal with the shifter. Maybe some loose wiring back there?
