Mine shifts like butta, I rarely even notice when it changes gears actually unless I am specifically watching for it like clicking the ECT off & on to see the difference.
I think if you turn OD off and ECT on and goose it you will get a more pronounced shift into gears because its is higher RPM.
But with OD on and ECT off it should shift rather smoothly.

First check your fluid level. As to normal I would say no it is not normal, but for me it would be prefered. Toyota's Automatics for my taste shift way too soft. They do that because most people like it that way, but it also causes some slippage in the shifting. Perhaps someone rebuilt the tranny and upgraded it to shift in a more positive way. Or as the previous poster stated you may have ECT on and the added RPM will do it also.

There are 3 cables under the hood.
One is your cruise, one is throttle, one is for the trans. The one for the trans, if tightened, can cause a harder shift. Perhaps try loosening it?

Since you have a 2001 4runner, you will have 1 cable only that controls the tranny. Cruise and acceleration are now ECU controlled. It is known as drive-by-wire.
Check the color of the ATF. If dark, drain it and refill with one that is DexIII approved or higher. Check the level by warming up the ATF, then running through all the gears from P to 1, then checkthe reading on the HOT level on the tranny dipstick.

I was worried about a pink milkshake (I prefer chocolate) because the radiator was replaced prior to me purchasing this rig. I checked the service
records and it was replaced due to a pin hole leak at bottom seem. This rig has great Dealer service history so I felt good about the purchase @ 136k miles.
No need for the rpms to be run up for shifting, I just notice when it shifts.
I guess I am use to driving the wife's sienna, very smooth on the shifting.
