Short Throw Shifter?

Hey guys,

I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of an LCE short throw shifter for the W59 behind my 3RZ. The current throw doesn't really bother me but I sometimes hit whatever I have in the front cupholder. I have also read that some folks report a less notchy 1-2 shift with a short throw.

Just wanted to see if others have any experiences or reviews to share about short throw shifters. 3.4L or 2.7L of course!

Have you ever looked at the shifter bushing and seat? They wear out over time and changing them makes a big difference in the amount of play and firmness of the shifts. They made a big difference in my 94 pickup.
I just put a LCE kit in my pickup and they shifter actually feels a bit more notchy than before but the throw is much shorter. Still on the fence weither it's going to stay or not because I don't have a lot of seat time with the new shifter yet.

Thanks for the input. I have already swapped out my shifter bushings with Marlin and they work very nicely. Currently my trans shifts firmly without much play. Now I'm just thinking about if a shorter throw would be beneficial or not.

The short throw kit also raises the height of the shifter, right? Did you notice that difference?

The short throw shifter is in my mod to-do list. Everyone on here that has it loves it. If 1st gear is a little sticky switch to Redline MT90. It really makes shifting much smoother.

Tall bottles in the back holder & short ones in the front! LOL

Edit: Yes it makes it a little taller. I'm 6ft & another inch or two on the stick would be perfect. They also sell shifter extensions. I was thinking about one of these so the stick would be more like an old customized or hot rodded pick-up.

It does raise it but only maybe like an inch. Wasn't all that noticeable.
I was doing the clutch and its something I wanted for a while and figured I'd just spend the 100 bucks and try it. If I didn't like it, I know I could always sell the kit.

I have the URD short throw on mine and love it. Had to put it on for my dual case install but I wish I would have done it sooner.

After the install I did bend the shifter so that the handle moved back a bit toward me (and away from the dash).

The URD and LCE kits look like basically the same thing, with the LCE being a little cheaper. Any reason to steer toward one vs another?

To me they looked the same. I bought what was cheaper at the time. The URDs were on sale...

Welp, I ordered one from LCE. Since I had the chance to save on shipping I went ahead and got a low-boost supercharger kit too.

Yeah, i've got the URD kit on my marlin trans and its been really good so far, shifts are much, much better and has held up great for the past few years. Also was a breeze to install. I highly recommend their kit!

I run the LCE kit. It's a solid setup. Makes the shifter super tight and notchy. I like it. Really throws people off who are used to stock shifters though, so be prepared for a learning curve lol.

The shifter doesn't feel like it has any looseness or slack in it at all though. I loctite'd, torqued, and peened the three set screws super well so those are not backing out.

I realized that since the shifter is moved upwards it pulls on the vinyl boot a little bit. I think that's what occasionally causes the buzz, but I rarely hear it anymore.

I love this short shifter. It's a must-have upgrade for me now. :lever:

I recently drove a 1st gen 4Runner around and the throw of the old W56 was incredibly long. Fun in its own way but also a pain after a while.

A while back...I remember there was a kit that required you to send your old shifter to be modded, and sent back to you for around $250.
That part must be no longer available now, and I cant remember who made it.

Anyone with short throws ever have worries about 5th-2nd money shifts? Really thinking about the LCE kit and this is the only fear holding me back atm. Was just thinking about this the other day when I was already taking apart my dash and decided to jump in there and at least see how the bushing and socket are holding up. Turns out the top of the shifter seat was absolutely filthy so I spent some time cleaning that up (glad I saw that before my breather got fully plugged) and then took things apart to confirm that my bushing and socket are VERY worn so I know I'm going to replace these anyway and I figured I would maybe spend an extra 80 bucks and make my elbow happier with a short throw.

Ha after some research I found there are shifting techniques for helping to avoid this issue. Not trying to hotrod or anything but there are times when I like to shift down to 4th fairly quickly when going up steep grades in the mountains or engine braking coming down. Decided to go ahead and purchase the LCE kit.

It's a great kit, I love mine. I don't do much fancy race car shifting in my truck though :bounce:
