Should Homelink work with ignition off?

Oh, oh, I can answer this.

You can get Homelink modules to control any electrical device. By control, I mean turn on/off. That includes alarms, appliances, lights. The most common thing is to buy a module that you plug into a wall outlet. You then plug a lamp into that and you can turn on/off with your remote. You can buy this stuff at Radio Shack.

homelink works with X10

I have an X10 switch on the outside of the house so I push the homelink button and the outside lights turn on. Homelink can control any RF controlled devices.

Ha, too many contenders around here -- I may have to relinquish my title soon.

Homelink and X10 make a useful combo. I use one button to turn on my downstairs and porch light. The other button turns all the lights out. As the other guys said, you need the X10 RF receiver and some wall switch (or lamp) modules. X10 is cool but can be a bit unreliable at times. For simple on/off control it usually works OK.

I wonder how I would be able to turn my alarm system off when I pull up the driveway? It is a Brinks system.

Rehashing old thread (but better than starting new one on same issue).

Did a test. Opened driver window and locked doors. Waited 20 seconds (not sure if necessary), then reached in and pressed the homelink button. Garage does not open.

This is good, as it's been a concern of mine for a while. As long as your doors are locked, breaking into your car does not allow breaking into garage. So, homelink is more secure than a regular car remote.

Interesting that this thread should come back up because 2 weeks ago, I left my 4Runner unlocked overnight. When I got into the car in the morning, it had been ransacked. Nothing was missing, not even a coin or sunglasses but everything was pulled out of the storage cubbies and glovebox. Clearly, a thief was looking for a garage remote.

Damn good thing I have the Homelink and it *does* not work without the ignition.

Interesting that this thread should come back up because 2 weeks ago, I left my 4Runner unlocked overnight. When I got into the car in the morning, it had been ransacked. Nothing was missing, not even a coin or sunglasses but everything was pulled out of the storage cubbies and glovebox. Clearly, a thief was looking for a garage remote.

I think you've misunderstood my post. It does indeed work without the ignition (go ahead and test it). Homelink ALWAYS work unless the vehicle is locked and the alarm is set (at least that was my finding).

Maybe the thief didn't see the homelink buttons.

Not mine. I installed mine aftermarket and I tapped into an ignition switched circuit. I thought maybe I would lose programming when the ignition was off but that is not the case.

Wouldn't leaving your car outside the garage be the security lapse? Clean out that garage and get your car in there! That's what it's for! Will help prolong the life of your dash and car as well...

...now, pardon me while I scurry to clear out the 1 car side so the new 4Runner will fit in there this weekend!
