Today I got around to making a shovel and axe mount for the Gobi Stealth rack today using a couple sets of Quick Fists and conduit hangers. I haven't seen this particular project written up with photos/detail (correct me if I missed it), so I thought I would dabble with my first write-up. Let me know what you think/like/hate/or suggest.
Here is the finished project; I'll detail the specific steps I took after:
I got 2 sets of Quick Fist attachments, conduit hanger and the necessary hardware together. I went with 1" conduit hanger, but could've gone with 3/4". I also got a strip of sheet rubber to snug and dampen the hangers on the Gobi rack:
I super glued the rubber to the inside of the conduit hangers and gave them a test fit on the Gobi rack, which also helped cure the super glue:
Here's a close up of a completed piece:
And all 4, post rattle can treatment:
I finalized the location and secured the conduit hangers to the Gobi Stealth rails.
I put the shovel on the rear passenger side:
And the axe across the rear of the rack, which still allows for the hatch to be opened without interference:

The overall project turned out pretty well. The rubber inside of the conduit hanger gives enough play to mitigate bumps while driving, but keep the Quick Fists secure. Like I mentioned above, I think 3/4" would've been a better fit and should the 1" start rotating down with time and travel, I will change them out. For now they are very snug. I am doing a 150 mile trip this coming weekend and will see how they hold up.
All in all, I'm less than $40 in on this project, which includes the shovel. Can't beat that with how much some of these accessories can cost.
