Show me 285s on Stock Trail

I just spoke on the phone with someone from my local tire store that I go for the last 5 years and he told me that if I switch from stock tires/wheels 265/70R17 to 285/70R17 it will mess up my transmission and my ABS won't work properly.

Also he told me that if I want to do it he would have to reprogram the transmission with a chip which costs about 200$. He also didn't want to sell me that size because it's illegal or something here. I know he has to follow protocol or something.

Happy he didn't try to just sell me stuff but explained to me the situation. He also said that the Trail Edition has a different type of wheel spec and to look on the door or call Toyota and ask them the max I can go.

I have been reading threads almost every day and I learned a lot here, my question is. Should I get 285/70R17 or what, the dude kind of messed my plans.

I know a lot of you guys have this size so I am a bit confused. What should I do. Thank you.

i hope this was someone you haven't dealt with at that shop for the last five years because that is what you friendly neighbors to the north would call a metric tonne of male-steer excrement.

the guy at the tire shop is going to "reprogram your transmission"? run. run far, far away.
 
I have gone there and bought wheels mags tires for my Honda accord
Honda civic and my 3rd gen 4Runner and all was fine, so I don't know maybe its a new guy or something.

Tell him you own a 4runner, not an F250.

...What, in, thee, hell is that man talking about? I'm assuming he also told you he has to reprogram your radio to all of his favorite radio stations as well or your rear differential will seize?

If anyone has a good place to get them cheaper please link site, if not I will shop around.

Sears is pretty good about price-matching what you find online at tirerack.com and treaddepot.com.
 
I am looking at getting the same tires for my sr5. It sounds like they are good to go on TE wheels but what about on the SR5 wheels? I also have steelies I could use. I know the offset is a little different between the TE and SR5 wheels. Am I going to be good to go?

thanks for the posts! ran this tire on my 2nd gen xterra with a melt modded fender. good to know i can run the same setup on the 4runner, spent 2 days looking for this thread!

@ sshink/1engineer your questions/answers got me away from the konigs :)

cheap mod and big payoff, i say sticky worthy.

@ rlin my truck will be identical before plasti-dip on the wheels, then opposite of scottsdale.

It's great to know that my stock T4R and lifted FJ can both run the same 285s......hmmm does anybody want to buy 265/70R17 Duratracs?!?

Soon. I've got five 285 Cooper AT/W tires on order. The truck is still on stock suspension. I'll post some photos when I get them installed.

And here we are. I had 285/70/17 Cooper A/TW put on today. I pulled the front fender liners forward and massaged the front mudflaps with a heat gun last night and so far so good. No rubbing while driving around today on pavement or over curbs and speed bumps. I'll have to get out and have some fun with it soon and see if there is any rubbing under compression but it looked pretty good to the naked eye.
