Show me your Windshield "bug" (marking)

I have crack in windshield and I have to replace it. The problem with aftermarket parts I have is that none of two windshield brands available do not have E marker (EU certification) on it. I'm moving this truck to Europe and they are very anal about EU markings everywhere.

Please if you have heated windshield please take a picture of your windshield bug (I mean the printed or eached markings, not splashed animal parts on it) and post it here. I am looking for OEM or aftermarket windshield with "E" in the circle in it. Please, do not post the splashed animal pictures here. Yes, I already got the joke.

Here is my curent windshield with E1 marking on it.

Does your OEM windshield have E-marking?

Never noticed an E marking on any of my American made autos or my Toyotas.

If the vehicle comes from the states, they are still that ANAL about an E marking?
If so, leave it here.

I went through local Toyota dealer lot and some windshields have E-marking some don't. They did not have any 4Runners there, so I couldn't check it.

Manufacturers in USA probably don't care about E-marking, as long as they have DOT, they are OK here. International manufacturers in majority have both markings DOT and E, some have also CCC (China). For example the original glass on my 2015 Nissan Versa Note has E1.

I know in Europe they are very anal about little chip in windshield - driving with cracked windshield will take you to police impound lot. They are also very anal about E-markings on headlights, DRL and fog lights - the car will not pass inspection and therefore will not be registered there.

While finding E-marked lights is not a big deal, getting the right windshield in there will be a major pita.
 
Toyota, like other OEM's, uses many different vendors for their OEM components. My advice is to get your windshield fixed here, E or no E. Once you get over there and need it replaced you will have the same problem getting one with the correct nomenclature as you will here apparently.

Agree with windshield replacement here. Preferebly with E code, like the one I have now.

I did research a little bit about the logo on my windshield and it appears to be AP Technoglass. Now I see the owner retired AP and now have business in USA under the name "AGC Automotive Americas" with aftermarket segment "AGC Automotive Replacement Glass". Maybe I should look for AGC instead OEM.

I would do it only as a last resort option, and after I have it replaced here for new "any" glass. It will cost me 100 dollars copay for insurance claim.

My uneducated guess would be that any part for American car (4Runner is not sold in Europe) will cost arm and legs.

I think my options are in the following order:
Now in USA:
1. Get E-marked glass OEM or not locally for 100 dollars copay
2. Get OEM E-marked glass for copay or if insurance does not approve OEM fopr the amount over my insurance limit (still waiting for final decision) locally
3. Get no OEM no E-marked glass locally for 100 dollars copay.

In Europe:
1. If my glass is questioned during safety inspection get E-marked glass there (bug bucks, I expect)

So this is why I asked you guys look at your windshield so I can point my glass shop to particular glass manufacturer or brand that has E-marking.

1. Find someone in Europe that has shipped their vehicle over there and ask about E marked glass.

There have been several military personnel that have 4Runners over there. None have mentioned this.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 4Runner is not marketed in Europe, just the Prado. Do these two models have the same windshield? If not, you will most likely not be able to locate a 4Runner windshield with the "E" rating here or over there.

I'm afraid you may be right. Glass shop here does not have it. I was curious about the windshield I have now - it is E-marked. From the logo I see it is AP Technoglass, which was doing glass for AGC Automotive Americas. Now this glass is made by Safelite Glass Corp. AGC is big international company making OEM and aftermarket glass for many car companies. The bug on my windshield proves that at some point there was E-marked windshield for 2012 4Runner available. I could not find it now, when I need it.

The glass shop told me that OEM windshield will cost me about 240 dollars if my insurance does not approve it. I think it will be OK. If there is no E-marking under Toyota logo at least when push comes to the shove I will have an arguing point that this is the windshield that came with the car.

BTW there is nobody I can talk to about DOT windshields in Europe, the same way hardly anybody here gives a monkeys nut about E-marking.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why are you registering it there at all? Are you moving permanently? My understanding is that anyone can ship an American-registered car on a tourist visa if you stay less than 6 months, and that time can be greatly extended if you have a set leave date or for military postings.

If moving permanently, why not just sell it and buy a used LC3 or LC4 when you get there?

Yep, going there for a long time. This is why I wanted Toyota, not Jeep. :barf:

Why not sell it? Because it's 4Runner. LC will not do it. :heh:

BTW for LC I would have to spring almost 60K for the same what I can get here for 40K. VAT, excise tax and duty is adding about 50% to the price of car in Europe.

Hmmm... I like that thinking. Laser printer toner transfer? Good black paint through silk screen?

BTW I got the quote from autoglass installation company, and if insurance will not authorize OEM I will pay about $240 out of pocket for Toyota logo glass. If E-mark is not there it will be easier for me to argue, that this glass came with the car from the factory, so E is not needed. I would rather play safe and pay 140 dollars more here than getting stuck in Europe with 40k car that I can't drive.
 
Finally after hours of phone conversation the OEM windshield got approved by my insurance. They said "one time exception". I hope I will not get rocked before my move. The replacement is scheduled for this Saturday. I'll post my new bug then.
