shrockworks rear bumper

After waiting for 3 months build time my rear bumper has come in. have anybody in here installed a 5th gen Shrockworks rear bumper? you have to hack your factory bumper shell. it's pretty much a one time deal. get it right the first time or you will be buying another stock bumper to cut. looking for tips and personal experience from anyone who have installed one.

Go slow and measure a bunch then measure some more. I used blue painters tape and a grease pencil to mark my lines and a electric dremel cut off wheel. Check out my build thread for a pic of how I cut the bumper in the hatch area.

I assume SW gives you instructions on where to cut? If so, go slow, we used a grinding wheel, and taped it, measure ten times, cut once.

The CBI one required a little bit of fitting because the plastic bumper sort of tucks into these cutouts on the back of the CBI bumper.

The only thing I will add is to cut it long. I measured and marked and then added an inch or two to what I cut. It was a pain as I had to fit and refit the bumper a few times but it saved me from over cutting for sure as I was able to get a really nice fit after a few times of fine tuning the cut. Good luck.

I would make sure to leave a gap. Yes having it be nice and flush is visually nicer, but that rear bumper will definitly flex, so at least a half to .75 inch is usually good.

Don't cut too much, but not enough can be bad as well.

yes they have instructions. i must read them 5 times most of it makes sense and somethings doesn't i guess you won't know until you start cutting it.

Get an actual cut off wheel made by dremel. It's much bigger than a dremel and makes a beautiful cut.

Go slow and then go slow. My bumper just took the entire thing off so can't really relate but I did cut the rocker panels for the sliders and did the same. Slow slow slow.

I've used the dremmel on this stuff before, no bueno. I used a regular jigsaw ( I have the one that attaches to my drill) and it cut smooth as butter. You saw my video's I'm sure, so PM me with any questions and I'll try my best to help. You're going to LOVE this bumper, I'm sure.

The shrockworks instructions for the cutting were surprisingly easy and clear. I didn't have any issues, just take your time!

I saw all 3 of your you tube video. (I think it's you) and they look badass. how difficult was it to cut with a jigsaw in the inside edge? it's kinda awkward in there. anyhow i'll be doing it this weekend and i'll post back. thank you for your input in this.

I did mine with a dremmel and it was horrible :fear: It wasn't cutting rather melting the bumper and the small size of the blade made it difficult on some of the tight corners.

Other tips:
1. Cut with the bumper on the truck, as it'll give some rigidity. (i took mine off and it was moving all over the place while I was cutting it.)
2. As others mentioned, cut long and then do final smaller cuts. you'll have better control of the cut.
3. take your time, the bumper itself is not hard to install, only a few bolts that will benefit having small hands.
4. Read and re read the instructions, they are really hard to understand unless they've made improvements, it'll take alot of assumptions to figure it out.
5. Run through all the instructions make sure all the hardware is accounted for. The summary on the front page was missing a few items when I did mine.

Jigsaw is the only way to go on cutting this stuff. Dremil would be impossible.

It cuts like butter with the proper blade and the jigsaw. Trick is to stabilize the piece (not that hard to do on the first cut). IF the entire thing vibrates... No cutting will take place. This is why I suggest trying to get it right the first time and not attempting multiple cuts.

Plan to smooth out a little after with some sanding. I've cut several of these and made them perfectly straight and smooth.

Shockworks product quality is really good.

Some of the corners were a little awkward, but I was still able to do it with a standard length blade (3-4 in?), just have to twist your wrist enough to follow the lines as best as possible. Good luck, looking forward to some pics.

Yop forgot to mention I used a jigsaw as well as cut off wheel. I took the safety guard off my jigsaw to get in those tight corners and turns.

This is the "Dremel" I used.

It worked like a charm on the flat areas.

I took a regular 4.5" Makita zip cut on an angle grinder. Worked good. Add edge trim to clean it up.
