Been looking at rear bumpers for awhile and will probable pull the trigger once my move is complete next month. I'm torn between the Shrockworks and CBI rear bumpers both allow for some customization and depending how to option them out they are pretty close in price.

One of the biggest reasons that I'm looking at getting a rear bumper is that I occasionly carry extra gas with me on extended trips and I don't like carrying it in the cargo area or on the roof.

Shrockworks: 4Runner Rear Bumper & Tire Rack, 3rd Gen (1996-2002)
Tire on the carrier sits low but you only get 1 jerry can holder (their design can't incorporate 2, already talked ot them)

CBI: Toyota 4Runner Rear Plate Bumper: 3rd Gen. 4Runner, Cbioffroadfab
2 jerry can holders but I don't like how high the tire sits.

Which would you choose if you had the option.

A 3rd option would be Armorolgy rear bumper, but that is out the door since I'm leaving Colorado Springs.

If I'm not mistaken, CBI will custom make your bumper with a lower tire mount if you so please. When I ordered my bumper, Nathan was able to make a few adjustments for me (custom width for skinny flares)

If not, well both seem pretty cool. The Shrockworks is new and will probably stand up to a hefty beating! I love my Shrockworks and CBI, both excellent quality bumpers.

I would say CBI, just because of the corner profiles. On my rear bumper, its the corners that see the most abuse, and the CBI offers just that much more clearance.

A higher tire mount will definitely help with clearance too...

you know what CBI stands for right? "Cant break It" off road (thats the truth)

i went to their shop 2 weeks ago and nathan talked to me and showed me their products completely over built and strong as an OX. being a mechanical engineer and learning how things are build and strong they are, CBI makes some killer stuff! the surprising part is that they dont weigh that much. 150 lbs maybe (guess)

like COB said,
If I'm not mistaken, CBI will custom make your bumper with a lower tire mount if you so please.
its true, if you want to change something, big to small they can do it.

For those of you looking for a CBI rear. There is one on CL for 799 already PC black. Made for1" BL. Search CL Stockton under 4Runner/CBI.

BTW: it's not mine...

CBI looks nice, I see a lot of people complaining about Shrockworks wait times.

Yep, I'm well aware of the wait time.

SmallFry,

I'm assuming you talked to Mark with your questions reguarding our tire carrier? I'm guessing his answers may have been based on what he saw on the prototype, but I acctually mocked up a dual jerry can set up in the design stage of the tire carrier. I decided to go with a single for the prototype because I figured it would be the more popular option.

We have yet to crank out our first production run of these, so its not to late for small changes. There has been a thread going for this bumper going for some time now and I dont recall anyone asking about it, so its not something that we bothered messing with. It would only require us changing one part and putting a couple diffrent hole patterns in it to allow you to accomodate either one jerry can laid flat, or two on edge side by side(note the green highlighted part in the picures). Running Jerry cans does limit you to a 33" tire on our carrier, but I figured most expo guys wouldn't be running any more than that anyhow.

Also, the way our tire mount is designed, it can be moved up and down on a series of bolt patterns. I believe I have the tire on "Ol' Black" set in the lowest position due to the fact that it sees mostly city driving and the mentioned clearance isnt an issue.

On a side note, Ol' Black is still running strong. It acctually had a stand off in a wal-mart parking lot last weekend and drove off with nothing more than some scuffs in the front bumper that litterally could be buffed out....and here is a pic of the opposing vehicle. The large crease in the hood marks my headlight guard:bravo:

Ya, it was Mark that I talked about the jerry can option. A 33" tire is bigger I would want to run anyways since this is my primary vehicle and going anything bigger than that I'd have problems lifting the tire.

Good to know ol'black can take a beating and keep on ticking.

I have:

Towed my 1st gen from Fullerton to Newport Beach, then to Mission Viejo. 35 mile drive.

Also towed my 89 Probe GT from Palmdale to Mission Viejo, about 110 miles.

I say CBI. It's just so much cleaner design in my opinion. If you're looking for the aethestic out of the two, CBI would be the victor.

I have a CBI, I haven't had any problems yet with it. Towing, I wouldn't hesitate to. There's so many points that tie into the frame. Way more then a factory hitch. It's not going anywhere. The only thing I don't like about mine is the single swinger, which I think I'm going to change over the summer. It's a lot of leverage with two jerry cans filled up and the tire when it's open. Also the mechanism to keep the swinger closed tends to back off when you're going down dirt roads. Not to the point where its going to fall out or anything. But when I get off a trail and check it and I can get a good half inch turn on it. The fit, finish, and quality is all top notch. As well as the customer service.

COB do you have a photo of the receiver installed on the bumper? I'm just wondering what the clearance is between the ball on the receiver and the bumper.
