Side curtain airbags deployed...cost? Insurance?

So in a dessert trip this weekend, I may have accidentaly tripped my side curtain air bags when rolling over a ledge. First incident: my brother slides into my door with his steel bumper. Looks like I will need a new door. :P It happens. Next incident: I wheel over a ledge that sets of the side curtains. The ledge itself was not very intends. The suspension and body of the vehicle is completely ok except for the curtain airbags and the headliner. So my question to the wise men on the forum, does anyone have an idea what this will cost out of pocket? Should I go through insurance? I really don't want to ding a point on my brother or my own insurance and raise our premium. I am pretty confident we can handle the door on our own but we aren't confident with the air bags headliner and locked seat belts. Should we consider this "two" accidents, or just one with insurance ?

Sorry to hear about the accident. Got hit in June on driver door so kinda similar to your damages. Attaching my final bill after i got it fixed. Note the sensors and all that crap when you look through. The Pilot is declared total loss.

Either way, it's going to be expensive. If the bags deployed they usually require replacement of the airbags AND the sensors, most likely a new headliner and some trim panels.

The bigger question is whether or not your insurance will take the claim, I have heard some companies refusing a claim because it was due to "off-roading" and not collision.

Thanks for that! So it cost 10k at insurance pricing? I wonder what t would have gone for at out of pocket pricing
That pilot looks toast compared to your rig. This 4Runner is actually my second. My first got totaled by a red pilot as well. Weird

Interesting. I may be able to get away with it if I state I am on a road. Lord of trails are actual roads down here.
My brother has usaa and I have mercury, so we shouldn't have any "lowblows"

I have never seen this. If I find this button im going to be sad

If I remember correctly what it really does is increase the roll limits of the system so when you're on rather odd angles or rocking it doesn't think it's rolling. I could be wrong on that, but I swore that I saw somewhere in some literature that in a true rollover it would still deploy.

Were you off-angle or did you actually roll the vehicle?

I would just check your insurance policy real quick and verify they don't have any oddball clauses in there for off-road damage (they probably don't), you don't want to get into a situation where they call you on your lie.

I always make a point of turning mine off, taken several good hits like what you describe, but to the sliders and skid plates (shouldn't make any difference to the sensors). no issues what so ever.

Ouch...

I would ask your insurance company if you are covered before going down that route. Plus go to an independent body shop and get a repair estimate so you know what type of costs you might be dealing with...

Well at least now I know what the RSCA button does...

Just read your policy, the no off-road thing is mostly a myth (by that I mean that I read it online all the time but have never seen an actual policy that excludes it).

Your insurance company would need to explicitly list it as an exclusion and the standard form does not include off-road as an exclusion. Before I took mine off-road for the first time I read through my policy, saw no exclusion, and even confirmed it with geico who also said "if it is not listed in your policy as an exclusion you would be covered".

The only thing excluded in my policy regarding offroad, and I assume this is pretty normal, is towing. My towing coverage is only for on-road or adjacent to a road so if I really ****ed up somewhere the tow would be out of pocket.

You might end up with a salvage title after it's all said and done. You need to get a proper estimate from a GOOD bodyshop.

I seem to recall the RSCA button going away with the refresh. It was a hot topic for a day or so, but was pretty much washed away by all the jokes about how ugly the refresh was.

I'm not at a place where I can look, so I can't confirm 100%.

Yeah I have heard that as well but never really verified it myself, so that's good to know.

i haven't read your policy specifically, so don't take my word on what your policy says. just read your policy, you can probably access the documents online.
