Side Exit Exhaust - Heat Question

Just got a Borla 40665 Pro XS muffler and an OEM exhaust tip. The original plan was to simply replace the stock muffler on my 2014 SR5 and route the exhaust out the side, behind the rear tire, as many here have done.

I went to the muffler shop and the first thing the owner was concerned about was the pipe's proximity to the plasticky bumper panels behind the mud flap. He indicated that heat would be an issue.

After searching the forum, I discovered a lot of great knowledge about side exit mods, but I never came across any discussion about heat build-up where the pipe sits under the plastic bumper corner.

Has anyone with a side exit exhaust ever had an issue with heat scorching/melting the plastic? In the picture above, is the exhaust too close to the bottom of the rear panel? If it this is a potential problem, I couldn't find any info on it. Is there anything to worry about?

I've had my exhaust turned out the side for 2+ years. I even notched the stiffener piece of black plastic underneath so I could get it tighter up there. Have done multiple 1000+ mile trips with no issue. Nothing to worry about. :thumb:

The stock exhaust tip is just as close if not closer to the plastic and it doesn’t have issues. I’m pretty sure mine was slightly touching the plastic before I adjust the last hanger more, and it didn’t melt like a trash can fire.

I had the side exit Magnaflow for about 4 years without issue, I did trim that little black piece of plastic on the bottom of the bumper though.

Do you have a 64mm borg warner, pushing 34psi, with fully built internals, and 2step anti lag? If you answered yes then you might have an issue.

Nice thread about your Magnaflow system but you are now running the Gibson?

OP - like the others are saying here, there should be no issue with the bumper being affected by exhaust heat. I have had tips installed close to plastic body parts on other, higher performance vehicles and there was never a problem.

Yeah I needed a change. The Magnaflow definitely has a drone and it was a bit louder than I wanted it to be under normal driving conditions and pretty annoying under load.

The Gibson has a much better tone but the quality of materials and fitment isn't as good.

Mine is not side exit, but it is after market (MBRP). I cut the rear pipe so the tip sticks straight out tucked high up into the bumper rather than pointed downward. It's about 1/4" away from the bumper plastic & I just drove to Utah & back from CA & ZERO melting issues.

Checked mine today, less than a finger's clearance tween the tailpipe and either the underside bumper or remainder of the strake (which I removed most of with a Dremel). No sign of heat damage, warping, melting, or anything of the such.
