Sighting in AR-15 Irons

So I'm planning on taking my AR-15 to the range this weekend. I have not shot this in 3 years at least. Last time I was out with it I tried sighting i the irons @ 50 yards and the range made me stop. Supposedly, they don't allow shooting at targets at 50 yards or less at the rifle portion of the range. I got pretty mad and left. From all the research I've done, it sounds as if Irons need to be sighted in at 50 yards. Since the range I'm planning on going to won't allow it, what should I do?

For the most part it will just sit in my safe waiting to be taken out for a range day every once in a blue moon. I may take a couple classes with it. I'd just like to know that the sights will be dialed in correctly and I can count on it to be accurate in the event that I really need it.

Really need it to punch paper at 50 plus yards or need it to drop a person at 25 or less yards? Most do the 50/200 which is what it sounded like you were attempting. The problems with that are hold overs/under etc. A lot of thinking in a really dynamic situation.

Found some instructions on line on how to perform a "mechanical zero" Guess I'll do that at home and then hit the range on Sunday. If I get in trouble for setting up a target @ 50 yards then so be it. Hopefully I can shoot enough before getting caught. This rifle is just for fun pretty much. I'm not one of the Zombie Apocalypse types, but I'd like it to work properly in the event that I need it to defend my family. Living in Los Angeles you always worry of a massive earthquake or riots light we did when the whole Rodney King thing went down. Hopefully it never needs to see any action other that what it would see on a "day on the range"

Yes, you are right about the 50 yard set up. Set it to mechanical zero and make adjustments based on shot placement. Use your smaller rear sight at 50 yards. That is how mine was set up and I shoot center of mass at 25, 50, and 100 yards with it.
