Simple question about Plastic Dipping wheel

Hi guys,

I feel like an idiot but there is a question that haunts me and that I was not able to find the answer googling it.

Let's say that you are plastic dipping your light gray wheel while they are off the vehicle, what will happen to the DIP around the bolt holes on the mags when you will screw those wheels back on?

I am under the impression that while tightening the bolt, the plastic dip will be ripped off, leaving a broken finish around the wheel lugs ... no?

I saw many guys plastic dipping their wheels off the vehicle, but never had comments about this.

What happens to the finish around those bolts while tightening?

Haven't done it on my vehicle yet, but on a buddies the dip only ripped off exactly under the nuts and was visible at all in the end.

In my experience, the better and more solid the coat is over the wheel the nicer it will "rip" from around the lugs.

I would try to keep the coat thin in the lug area. Enough to give it color but not much build up.

Bad idea, it will haunt you upon removal. Obviously don't cake it on causing build up in the holes, but good wet coats after the first tack coat. Just drop the appropriate size coin in each hole, it will allow a good clean line when removed, and keep the lug seat free of dip.

If you prep it well it'll hold up better, but yes, that's pretty much the issue you'll run into.

However, you may be able to mitigate the problem by plastidipping the rims, then placing the lugs on the wheels (with the wheel still off the car), tracing around it, and using an Xacto knife to very precisely cut out the area that the lug nut will contact. Then peel that out and yeah, there won't be any plastidip under it anymore, but you won't be able to see it when the lugs are installed and there won't be any chance of ripping the plastidip further because they won't contact it.
