Skid plates? BB vs. SW

I ended up parting out my BBs, sold them to some FJ guys.

These are the non KDSS version, Pawzitiv has the KDSS version.

Disregard the arrows, its an old pic of when I was having problems mounting it.

Now I have ARB skids, they don't offer as much protection (being aluminum), still have that lip, but its not a huge step like the BBs.

I emailed bud about this issue and have not heard back. That space is due to the spacers we NON-KDSS guys have to us for the sway bar relocate and the radiator support spacers. Now I know I will be removing the front sway bar in the near future so I won't be worried about the gap when I order my buds.

We MIGHT be able to do a run of stainless, if we had a few guys willing to go in together on it. We dont currently use stainless for anything, so we would need prob 2-3 full sets to fill and use an entire sheet of stainless.

Keep in mind, it would be a good bit more expensive(IE: BB charges an extra 500+ for stainless). PM me if you want to try and hash out some details.....

I'm also considering skids, and SW's was at the top of my list, mainly b/c of oil filter access. But in the pic's posted by adio3x above, it looks like the BB has a oil filter access too.

Am I correct in saying only the ARB does NOT have oil filter access.

Correct, but its not hard to take the front skid off, just a couple of bolts.

Hofs05 and I just put in a big order with Budbuilt. There service was great and we'll have it all in 3-4 weeks.

I have the Shrockworks sliders and love them and the BudBuilt full set of skids and love them too and there are absolutely no fitment problems between the two.

The thing that I personally don't like about the SW skids is the bolt heads hanging down where they can catch on rocks and get damaged. Especially here in Texas, Utah and out west where there are alot of rock shelves that you have to climb up over rather then rounded rocks. They really need to come up with a better design for flusher fasteners IMO.

BB's design with the square holes and carriage bolts on the bottom makes for a flatter bottom as my carriage bolt heads are scarred up from sliding over rather then catching on rock ledges. The only 2 that have the regular bolt heads is the front 2 and they are more up out of the way in front.
Here's a carriage bolt like on BB's4927902862_79d42d9a48.jpg

To me,in this picture it looks obvious that the BB front slider should have gone on before the front SW washout panel to make the smooth transition.

Was it even tried that way? The one I fabbed myself is basically the same way but the front skid has to go on first and it's overlapping from front to back.

The holes don't line up and if you were to push the skid up, then it wouldn't fit with the following skid plate. I talked to bud about this and his only suggestion was to drill holes.

I was going to just cut that lip off.

You might be hard pressed to hit them without mashing the rest of the diff too, but I suppose it is possible. It sits higher than the adjacent gas tank; if I had to choose between the two I would take the gas skid for sure. But the Bud diff skid gives a lot of piece of mind. I would have it on a SR5 or LE too.

The issue is on the front side of course and the locker mote (not as strong as the diff body) and wires are subject to damage from under brush and rocks that wouldn't hurt the diff even without a plate.

Nicely done sir! Its great to see this stuff acctually getting used and abused.

We are working on a solution to protect the bolt heads better. The idea is similar to that of the alumium rock domes used on beadlock wheels, but built from steel and lower profile.

Carriage bolts are great when you can get a nut on the back side of them, but that isnt always the case.
