Skids suck!

I've got a 4th gen and took it through a harvested corn field (I hunt), and the corn stalks went right through that cheap wire shield on the skid plate and stuck up into the engine bay. One missed everything, but the other got jammed inbetween the frame and a line of some sort, luckily not causing any damage. I took them out, but they pretty much destroyed all of that expanded metal.

I read an earlier post that someone was making better skids, but then decided not to. Is there anyone building them? If I can't even go into a corn field without getting damage, then I'm in trouble come next September.

There will be more options in the future. How far in the future it hard to say.

You could also look for a local shop to make a custom skid.

Not much for welding, otherwise I would do the Downey.

However, for $400 I'd buy a welder and buy a Downey. :bash:

One side of mine is torn open and I haven't even been in any cornfields. For your specific circumstance, it would seem having a stronger mesh welded on would do it. I imagine the purpose of the airflow there is aerodynamic rather than anything else. Maybe not, but if you decide it is, you could just have solid plates welded in place of the mesh. Problem solved.

I wonder if you could take off the sorry excuse for a skid plate and take it to a metal shop and see if they can fab up an exact duplicate but in 1/4 inch steel. It would fit right up and give a lot more protection.
Just an idea.

I guess that I could just weld up the solid plate, but I'd like to get something a little more permanent for more offroad work later on it's life. It's mostly the wife's car right now, but that'll change soon enough.:bash:

1/4" thick? no way man, way too thick, that would be a REALLY heavy skid. 3/16" should do just fine, and remember that you prob. want your skid plates to bend before your frame does...
