Skirt Delete?

Hi,

I've had 1st 2nd and 3rd gen Runners in the past. Looking at a 5th gen now. I found a real honey at a local dealership but it's equipped with side skirts (is this all 2011s? Seems very common) and running boards under the skirts. I'm sure this is just what you need when you get into a tight spot at the mall or in the school drop off line but I plan to wheel this and need more clearance on the sides. ;)

Obviously the chrome/black running boards will just unbolt. I guess the skirts would too but what about giving a "finished" look under the wheel arch flairs at either end? There was a 2015 next to it at the lot that didn't have the skirts and had some black plastic bits to finish things off. I plan to put sliders on it so I don't think down the length is an issue, just the ends.

I did a search and was surprised to not come up with something. This is a REALLY active forum though and it's probably just buried. I'm attaching a picture so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks,

Chris

Yeah, the one I'm looking at is pretty like that. Almost a shame to go out and bounce it off a rock and rub it up against a tree........almost.....

This is what i did to mine, i didnt want to go with a rock sliders cuz my 4runner has a 1 inch body lift so bolting the rocksliders to my frame will leave a gap and also dont want to spend alot for the sliders. I bought a running board off a 2015 4runner cuz the bracket is shorter compared to the one i had on which tucked the running board up to where i want them also i pushed them in towards the body so that its not sticking out and cut the ends of the bracket.

My buddy has a body shop and trimmed and painted mine for an 18 pack of Budweiser.

Nice!

The running boards this car has really cut the ground clearance down to car level. It only has about 1" more than my Audi A4 and that car's pretty low. I guarantee a Subaru Outback has more clearance than this 4Runner has under the running boards.

Ph3n0m427: It looks like you just took rocker trim off and didn't put anything but the running boards in their place? Not a comprehensive angle in the photo, but it doesn't look "unfinished" to my eye.

Hi,
t ...what about giving a "finished" look under the wheel arch flairs at either end?

Hey there, I ran my '13 without the rockers for awhile. You definitely don't want to wheel with them on as they will get torn up. I was able to buy some rocker trim off another member here, but you will still need the front cap.

Here's what it looks like without the rocker...

Another pic, after lift before tires, but you get the idea... http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/202588-adventures-4rnr-grl-build-5.html#post2115047

If you leave the front end cap off, it will look very unfinished: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/202588-adventures-4rnr-grl-build-14.html#post2171574

Here's the part numbers for both front caps. I know it says 2015, but trust me they fit perfect... you will however need a couple screws or when you wheel they will pop off. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/202588-adventures-4rnr-grl-build-16.html#post2177095

And here you can see them on... http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/202588-adventures-4rnr-grl-build-16.html#post2182046

Good Luck!

EDIT: I realize it looks like I linked to the same page each time, but trust me, the links work.

Thanks guys and gals! I bet I could find some of those parts at a junk yard. Shouldn't be too hard. Now just need to figure out what sliders to get. I went ahead and bought the truck. Ditching the ridiculous running boards is priority 1!
