Sliders

I bought a set of Shockwork sliders from a fellow 4th gen owner. They were designed for non-XREAS and I have XREAS.

The difference is that the non-XREAS have a gusset that gets in the way of the XREAS lines. All I had to do is grind off the gussett and they worked.

When installing the sliders you have to take the XREAS lines out of the plastic clips that hold it to the frame. There are 4 on each side of my 2003. 3 of the 4 clips had to be removed because they lined up with where the sliders bolted on. I was able to clip the line in the 4th clip after installing the slider. The part of the slider that attaches to the frame slides under the XREAS lines, a bolt goes through the slider bracket on top of the frame and that is what secures the slider to the frame. It is a extremely tight fit. I had to smooth out some of the weld on the frame with my grinder to get the slider to fit.

On my 2003 the driverside was a royal PIA, the passenger side was cake.
The driverside has other lines (interior side of the frame rail) in the way where you have to put a bolt in and the bolt in the rear goes where the gas tank is so it is very hard to access.

If you go this route have a lot of patience and start with the driverside.

I dont see the sliders helping with car dings. They dont stick out that far. If they did I would be hitting my legs on them.
 
stubb slider look pre weld and I think to go this way

I look under my 4runner and I see the x-reas line just on the midldle of the frame exactly where the slider need to be weld-on

so if I want weld on what is the solution ?

The trail gear sliders I have (weld on) came with the support tubes seperate
from the slider, I had to cut and weld them to the slider to giving me the
options of how far they stuck out, the angles I wanted them at as well as
the specific locations I could weld them to the frame. If you go that route it
might be a little easier to avoid the X-reas and you can get them to extend
further out to act more like a runningboard/car door bumper if thats what
your looking for.

sliders do look good

What exactly do you mean, that they are annoying? Thanks for the compliment on the how they look.

My guess is he's referring to the extra wide cropping and some of them being landscapes while a couple are portraits. With the unusual (not 2:3ish) aspect ratio it's a little rough on the browser and on the eyes. I agree they're great looking sliders though, but I've told you I like your 4Runner before

If i go with bolt on do i need to drill hole in my frame ? The SW sliders protect against other doors ? The installation is difficult with x-reas?

With bolt on, at least the CBI, and I believe this to be true of the Shrockworks, there is no drilling. The brackets go around the frame and bolt up above. I cannot comment on Shrockworks protection against door dings, as I have never used them. Although, I would imagine they would be like the other sliders mentioned, in the sense that, the protection they will provide against other car doors depends completely on the car hitting you. Lastly, in my experience the x-reas was not what made the slider install tough, but more, the tight area in which you are working between the frame and the undercarriage components.

Note: Desert fox's comments on his Shrockworks install seem spot on with what I experienced and sum up the install and it's difficulties well.

Ultramontanist is correct about Shockworks, they have a bolt that goes through the slider bracket on top of the frame.

They fit very tight, which is why I had to grind a little of the weld down. The install is technically easy it is just a PIA because there is not much accessability to get the bolts in on the driver side. The pasenger side was pretty easy.

Keep in mind I did the install myself so there was not any moral support while I had my left hand turned in three different directions trying to start one of the nuts. I spoke words that I had forgotten.

The sliders look good but I dont think they will offer any real protection from door dings.

A Doberman or Rotwiler are a good defence for door dings.
 
anyone have any idea how strong bolt on sliders are? for example would it be strong enough to use a hi-lift jack to lift the vehicle from the slider? Maybe I should also ask if a weld on would be strong enough to do that.

I lifted the tires off the ground using a floor jack. I am sure a hi lift would too.
