Sliding cargo tray

It rattles.

Rough roads, smooth roads. On road, off road.

Small groceries fall under it and get stuck. Grapes turned into raisins. Small rocks get into the rails and jam them.

It is honestly one of the most useless features of the 4Runner. I've looked at exploded parts diagrams as to what is necessary to pull the damned thing out, and it seems to be a bear of a project that will leave a lumpy cargo floor in its wake.

Has anyone had any luck quieting this thing down, besides turning up the radio?

I have absolutely no issues (rattles or anything else) with mine and hauled over 450 lbs of stone on it. I do put my small groceries in bags or boxes though instead of just throwing them back there lol.

With that said I can take it or leave it. I have only used the slide portion a few times. No plans to remove it yet but maybe in the future.
 
I put a 125 lb. drawer system on it.....

Toned that ***** right down..








but seriously.... I'm also looking at it going, heck, I could pick up 4-5 inches of usable space by taking it out (the drawers pull out anyways, and with the unit being secured by turnbuckles, it's a pain to disconnect and pull out at this point) , thus dropping the fridge down that far as well.

You know how much easier it would be to get a beer out?
 
yea mine doesn't rattle either on my TE but the Limited i had rattled a little but not bad. i could do with or without it, but i have it so i'm cool with it lol

i am at the outer banks right now so ofcourse tailgating on the beach has left sand residue in the tracks, so we'll see how that goes later on.
 
No rattles here. I use the tray for staging my photography equipment. It's handy to have it pull out and make everything easily accessible.

I use the grocery bag hooks to hold grocery bags containing items which may "escape". Of course those won't work for reusable or paper grocery bags, only the plastic bags.
 
It's really not that tough to remove.
I unbolted and pulled all the parts out in less than 30 minutes. No swearing involved.

It does leave a slightly lumpy floor. There's a raised edge in the carpet on the sides and back. You can easily remove that carpet piece and lay down foam pad and some truck liner for a flat floor.

Or build a false floor for storage.

I bought the overpriced Toyota flip up panel after having things drop off the back. I leave a small square of 5/8 plywood in the space under it wrapped in a small tarp -- part of my recovery equiptment.
The panel keeps my CO2 tank in place against the rear seat too.

Have you figured out if it's the tray rattling in the rails or the whole thing? Could be that some of the bolts weren't torqued enough and rattled loose or something. I don't have any rattling, but I'll probably remove mine because I've had the same issues with small things falling underneath it. I also find that no matter what, every time I pull the tray out something will fall into the gap and I have to pull it out before I can slide the tray back in.

I'm going to torque it up this afternoon and see if that fixes anything.
 
95k on my 2010 limited and have never had an issue with the tray at all...it is pretty pointless though! gets most of its use while tailgating at concerts as a seat!!!
 
I guess I'm in the minority. I use my slide out tray quite a bit.

In my old '98 Cherokee, I'd throw concrete blocks or bags of potting soil (or anything else heavy, I guess) into the rear space and then shimmy things around. That meant leaning in and wrenching things around. It was never easy. But now, I slide the tray out, put the items on the tray and arrange them while standing on the ground, and then just slide the tray back in. Taking things off the tray is just as easy.

Like I said, I'm in the minority. I use the tray quite a bit.

Yup... this, too!

Through all this use, I've never heard a rattle or anything that made me think anything was loose. Let us know what you find after you check the tightness of all the bolts. I'd be interested to know what you find.

95K?!?!? Holy smokes - I guess I don't drive much - I'm at 9.5K. Thank goodness for my 12 minute commute!
 
No squeaking noises here.

You can open the rear window, lift the tailgate, and stand on the sliding tray up through the open window and get to the roof rack for securing cargo, etc. That, and sitting on it at the end of the trail to drink a beer seems to be about it for me. I think i will get that flap, as falling items are definitely a problem.
 
Mine has never rattled. I do admit to being frustrated with it as I don't like to think about the dirt and stuff under it that I can't clean up. But, no one has mentioned what I think is the best benefit of it; it makes for a flat rear cargo area when the rear seats are folded down. This is great for sleeping in the back of the vehicle. I slept in the back every night on the way to and from Moab this spring and it was great.
 
Forgot to mention that you have to remove the fold up flap thing to have the flat floor. I did this and filled the holes where the screws go with some things I got from Lowe's that have a flat plastic head. They look factory.
 
Would like get rid of my sliding tray, just got to find someone local to swap out parts with. To buy all new part would set you back $800. Anyone is Vancouver with a base sr5 willing to do a strait up swap?
