Slimline Subwoofer

I just ditched my civic for a 15 Trail. Overall I am very pleased. I have been thinking about adding a slimline subwoofer under a seat to fill in the low and mids a little better. Has anyone done this?

This is one I as looking at.

I'm not looking to be loud, just to improve the quality of sound.


Thoughts/recommendations?

Pioneer, Kenwood, Panasonic...etc are GREAT electronic audio manufacturers. But if you just want 'MORE BASS'... why not go with two who specialize in bass systems...

I mounted the sub under the passenger seat (no clearance issues) and put the bass knob in the cubby under the AC controls. Ive been very happy with my setup

i installed a pioneer flat sub, bought from ebay...sound is decent.its at the back of my truck, powering it with a boss monoblock 1000w amp

I installed this Kenwood powered sub under my front passenger seat a few months ago. Fits just right and sounds great. Excellent for reinforcing the bass in your truck. It really made a huge difference to me. Not a good option if you want to be heard before being seen, though. Definitely won't rattle your neighbors windows.

I think the main reason that you're not likely to see companies like 'Kicker, JL audio, Alpine'...etc building 'drop-in' replacement stereo components is because their "niche business" is not to compete with... but to build audio systems that will far 'Out Perform' the "Just good enough" factory stereo equipment. Just my 0.002 cents.

This thread has my interest. Especially since the Mrs. even commented that I should put a sub in.

That being said, a few years ago I received a Sound Ordinance slim sub for Christmas. I had it in a F150 for a while and now it resides in my 4th gen in the cargo area. I found it ok in the F150 but kind of boomy in my 4th gen, especially for passengers in the rear seat. I wonder if mounting it under a seat would help it sound better? It wouldn't fit under the driver seat in my 4th gen but possibly would on the passenger side except that's where the XM module is (yes, I still use that on occasion). Is there more room under the seats on the 5th gen?

There are a few slim subs that have my attention. I may have to go listen to some now.

Just so I understand, jl and alpine both make speakers from tweeters to subwoofers, amplifiers, both make processors, and alpine makes source units. How do they specialize in bass systems anymore than any of the other brands you listed? Just curious.

As you have stated above... they both make great audio system products as do many other brands. But with the proliferation of Mobile audio 'High output' Sub-woofer competitions, shows, and events becoming so mainstream, these company's technological advances in sub-woofer 'engineering & design' have earned them national recognition as two of the leaders in the industry. This is why I consider subwoofer design a specialty of them both; and many other companies not mentioned here, Rgds!

I'm a fan of Pioneer subs, Premier subs actually. Years ago I had 2 premier subs in a tiny box with a measly 500 watt cheap amp and it absolutely had some thump. I would say their subwoofer game is strong.

FWIW, I have a cheap Panasonic home theater system with a tiny sub and that thing actually has some thump to it. I actually wouldn't mind picking up an identical sub for the 4runner.

see what i have in my truck...cudnt fit it under the seat, so its lying in the trunk...the effect is more pronounced at the rear.....wish i could find a way of fitting it under the drivers / passenger seat

I took some inspiration from this and had my amp mounted under the driver seat and it fits just fine. The shop I had do it connected into the door speaker wires near the kick plate and didn't go through the console and behind the head unit. I luckily had saved the wire harness to my amp (alpine mrx-50 maybe) so once it was spliced in the other end plugged into the amp.

Wow I have always been a fan of JL's thank you for post this ... I might upgrade my speakers down the road and will definitely get these shallow mount JL's ...

Would you be willing to post some pictures? I actually had to kicker in my civic but didn't think that the clearance was going to work in the 4runner!

I actually had the kicker in my old Honda Civic. It added just the right amount of bass to keep me relatively happy with the stock speakers. It wasn't anything that the neighbors would hear but it definitely add quality bass which is what I was looking for.
