It got Awesomer with VVTI, but Un-Awesome with electronic throttle control, and an Air Injection Pump crammed under the Plastic intake manifold....
Atleast when the AIP goes bad in the 5th Gens, you have easy access to it!
Also, it is possible to get a Midsize Toyota BOF with a V8 and a manual transfer case in the US...for ultimate perfection!

I've driven a 2012 rental Acadia (wider/taller/longer/heavier than a 4Runner)with the 3.6 LLT. It has better dyno stats than the 1GR-FE, although I can't find an actual chart to compare torque curves. One the one hand, the engine felt more anemic cruising than our 2014 4Runner, but I was in the Santa Fe area and was around 5,000-10,000 ft the whole extended weekend. However, when I wanted it to get up and go, it did so without hesitation. The 6-sp tranny was nice on the interstate. I was able to coax 25mpg out of it, whereas 20mpg is the best I can get out of the 4Runner, with similar driving strategies.
It's been a while since I drove the Acadia, so my memory is getting fuzzy! However, the performance tests I looked at shows the advantage the 4Runner has in acceleration over the Lambas is due to curb weight, not that the 1GR-FE outguns the LLT.I have as well spent plenty of seat time in the GM Lambada cross-overs. Ever single one of them I drove felt slow off the line and transmission was constantly gear hunting. The 3.6L LLT or 3.6L LFX is smooth operator in a Camaro, Impala, ATS or CTS. The engine is just barely adequate in a 4,900lb cross-over. I have an LFX in my Impala LTZ and love it or I will love it until the timing chain goes at 50K. The problem is even worse on these with AWD and models like the Enclave with other extras.
The 4Runner despite the fact being down one gear in the transmission and 11-18hp seems far quicker, the performance tests prove this. 0-60 in a 4WD 5th generation is 7.5-7.8 seconds and a Traverse AWD is 8.4-8.6 seconds.
Hopefully our 4Rrunner will loosen up and get some summer gas in her in a bit to get the mpg up past 20. So far, the 4Runner is the only vehicle I've ever driven that gets less than the EPA sticker number. The rental Acadia was one of many that beat it.Regarding fuel economy I know guys in my hilly area with LFX V6 powered Equinox's with AWD that are getting 15mpg in town, I can nail 16mpg in town if I behave. Not bad for a vehicle that can tow 1,500 pounds more and has a bigger engine with more torque. I had a rental 4Runner in the summer of 2012 it was a 4WD SR5 and at constant speeds of 45-55mph in a national park I got 25 MPG! On the interstate or 4 lane US highway at 68-69mph I can eek 22 out as well. I am more than happy with the performance/fuel economy ratio in the 4Runner.

It looks like the 4Runner kicks the Lambdas around, but the base 2WD 4Runner is ~15% lighter than the GMs. Also, if you look at the test report, the 4Runner was tested when it was 54 degrees. The two Lambdas were tested when it was 83, that's about a 6% difference in density altitude (the 4Runner will make more horsepower). Taking weight and air density into account, the two vehicles are equal again.
