Hi Everyone,
I have been driving my 97 around for a few months now without any issues, and finally got the chance to do some off-roading this past weekend, which was awesome. Unfortunately, an issue came up during the trip however that I am trying to figure out. During a morning warm-up, I noticed that the starter is turning the truck over noticeably slower than usual, and especially compared to the other trucks that were present during the trip. Note that we hadn't gone through anything significant at this point, so the starter wasn't dunked in a mud puddle or anything..
Normally, I'd suspect the starter contacts and/or the wiring to the starter, but the contacts (at least in my Celicas) have all failed with a clicking sound, but no turning over at all. Even more odd is the clear smell of burning brakes that goes away after a few seconds, telling me that it is being caused by something startup related. I checked the A/C compressor to be sure the clutch spins freely so that isn't the issue, and my truck is an auto so it isn't clutch smell, I'm wondering if the brushes are being eaten inside my starter?
Has anyone heard of a problem like this? If the starter was easy to access I'd just pull it and see if I could find anything wrong, so I figured I'd ask here first for advice.
Thanks!
