Smart key ''accessory'' time limit.

I could not find anything related in the search results, so here I go

My vehicle with smart key is timed on ''accessory'' or ''on'' mode (start button), when the engine is not running, meaning that after 20 minutes, the truck will turn completely off when in ''accessory'' mode or ''on'' (using the start button). This is getting VERY annoying when listening to music around the truck or just chilling around in it. And what's the use of a ''party mode'' switch if everything turn off every 20 minutes ??? I don't know any 20 minutes parties.

I've looked in the dealer customizable options here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...s-dealer-can-program-2010-toyota-4runner.html and nothing appears related.

Anyone can help me overriding the 20 minute timer on the ''accessory'' or ''on'' mode?

Seems to me that an optional feature like that one should be, "Defeatable"!!

Agreed. You can choose the number of seconds your puddle light stays on, but not this...

Btw, (don't want to start a new thread on this), for those with a limited and a remote starter, when you remote start your truck, push the start button twice, then hold before depressing the brake pedal. This will override the smart key system and prevent your engine from stopping (you won't have to restart each time).

If you don't do this, when you enter your (warm) truck it will shut off and you will have to restart it, which is very annoying when you use it each day.

Really? I thought the system shuts off as soon as you unlock the car or open the driver door?

2 instances the system will shut off is if you depress the brake pedal or if you go over the time limit. You can also shut down the car with the remote. But opening the door won't.

And this is for the OEM system not an aftermarket one correct?

GotMo and I experienced this auto shut off feature of our 4rs. We were at a drive in with the families and both of our trucks shut off at the same time. However, once we pushed our 'start' buttons again to accessory, it never shut down for the rest of the movie.

I believe that once our trucks 'know' we want it on acc., it stays on. I assume to prevent accidental battery drainage.

installed by Toyota, but aftermarket afaik. Is there a OEM toyota remote starter available?

I think they work all the same on this subject.

good thank you, I'll try that, and hope it works. I'll go crazy if it begins to do that during a movie and miss an important line.

Three cheers diverscale,

Thanks for the info!! My limited doesn't have the "Remote Start" feature because when I ordered it, I never specifically asked for "RS" cuz I believed that "fully loaded", meant just that! But I had heard that the factory remote had a few objectionable characteristics, and you just explained to many of us what to do about this.

Maybe you need to begin a new forum that addresses just that, cuz alot of ppl don't know what you just shed the light on!!!

Greg (rig), best regards

There is an OEM remote starter available that (from what I've read on these and other forums) shuts off the engine when the car is unlocked or the door is opened (in the case of a Smart Key opening).

My dealer installed Pursuit remote start shuts off the truck aprox 5 seconds after any passenger door is open, it does not shut off if the rear hatch is opened.

As to the accessory, mine shuts off every 60 minutes regardless of how many times i've turned it back on. I'm thinking that this might be programable but  Maybe someone with TIS tech stream can check it out.

Most of these trucks are "Cut from the same cloth", meaning...The 5th Gen's all start out the very same way; as per trim. Take the "Limited" for instance.

Toyota will build the chassis with just one main "wiring harness". That wiring harness isn't different if that vehical will be equipt with "heated windshield wipers", "2WD", "third row seating" or "Remote Start"...etc. All of it's branches will still be there...but unused harness connectors will be "capped", and water tight!

So if I decide that I later want to add,"RS", all that my dealer mechanic needs to do, basically, is pop in the remote start relay (plug-in relay, socket position is already there on fuse block panel), W/transmit reciever module, and sell me a new "keyless entry" hand held controller....Done!

that might be a programmable feature. On all the remote starts I've gotten (4 total) never I had to restart my car when getting in, nor the engine stopped when the doors were opened.

On most remote starters there are a few programmable options that you can even change yourself (sometimes) if you have the manual.

I hope this will help, because as I said, during winter I use the remote twice a day at least when I park outside, and this could get very annoying to anyone in the same situation.

like I said in this same post, might be a programmable option. This makes no sense for everyday use. Maybe this is why my toyota dealer does not install the OEM remote...

I agree that it makes no sense. However, it's the same way on Lexus vehicles here in the U.S. Technically speaking, Toyota didn't design the "OEM" remote start option in our vehicles. Thus, it isn't a fully integrated design and explains the less than stellar integration.

Moreoever, in Japan, there is a Toyota-designed remote starter available for the LS460 which functions as you would expect a remote starter to function. A guy on the LS460 forums has one for sale for a couple grand last I recall.

Hijacked

WOW, this is the worse case of thread hijacking I have ever seen. Yea I realize it's an old thread as I was searching for "Smart key ''accessory'' time limit" and this is what came up. Wahla, I found it, two post later were into REMOTE START. Come on guys??? Back to searching!!

Anything new regarding the accessory timeout with the smart key? I am going to a drive in movie theater tonight and don't want to have to hit the button Every 20 minutes

Yes I did find a solution, it is quoted in an earlier post somewhere in the forum.

Won't go back all into details, please search for the complete explanation.

When you go to the movies, put your parking brake on, turn A/C system off, then put the truck in NEUTRAL. Then, shut it down, and turn it on again without touching the brake pedal, putting in in the ''ON'' status (not accessories). There will be no time limits, and your radio will work.

From my experience, I've let the truck like that with radio on well over an hour before restarting to charge the battery with no issues. Could probably go on for hours without a recharge, but don't risk it over 1.5-2 hours.

I haven't finished RTFM yet, so forgive me if this is covered there, but is there a way to switch between 'accessory' and 'ignition ON' without cycling to "Off" with the push button start?

Or is there a way to maintain window power with only 'accessory' turned on?

Annoying to have to cycle the radio off just to regain window power for a few seconds.
