I'm looking at a 2012 limited edition. Concerned about the smart key and watersports. Can we lock the smart key in the car with the mechanical key?

You can't lock the Smart fob in the car as they make it idiot proof and will beep at you/won't lock ,so you don't forget it in there.
Easy work around takes 5 seconds....Take the end of the mechanical key and open the fob and take the battery out .There's a little notch in the case the exact width of the end of the mechanical key that's made to pry it open .Put the battery back in and snap it together when you get back in the truck to go.

Pelican micro cases have always served me well for when I'm at the river or beach (kayaking or canoeing usually). REI/Bass Pro/etc. usually have a nice assortment in stock so you can see which size would fit your needs and they're relatively inexpensive for the safety they provide. I keep a keychain float on the carabiner just in case. These Pelicans are good to a depth of about a meter; if you're doing any sort of diving I'd find an alternative.

Mostly idiot proof, as in when the battery is dying in the remote and you hop out and lock the door forgetting you left the keys in the center console and the door won't open even though you locked it. Fortunately after waiting a few minutes while on the phone with my wife it finally opened, the car does some strange things when the battery is going dead in the fob.
Yeah I won the stupid award that day.

Unfortunately the room sensors will pick up that the key is inside the key and not allow you to lock it in. I would try the Pelican cases.

How about leave the fob at home and bring only your standard key. When i dive or surf thats what i do

Because he won't be able to start the car without it AFAIK. There is no key hole to start the car on a limited.

Imo mainly beacause of my hobbies no key to turn the ignition is a design flaw,even though nearly all makes are going that direction....

C'mon guys. Get a Ziploc bag, seal it up about 3/4 of the way, suck the rest of the air out and quickly seal it. Will then be a waterproof method to protect whatever you need to protect, including key. I do this when I ride mountain bikes in the rain. If I am going somewhere and doing something where I don't or can't take my key I still put it in a Ziploc bag and hide it by burying it in the dirt, sand or rocks.
I even use a gallon size Ziploc to protect my Kindle when at the beach. I use it for my cell phone when I will be in a really wet environment. Seal it 3/4, suck the air out, seal it the rest of the way and BOOM! You have a waterproof container that is no bigger than the phone and you can talk or dial through the bag without ever taking it out. Cost me like a nickel to get a waterproof container for every electrical gadget you carry. Oh, it's waterproof down to ten meters lol.
