Smart Phone Linked OBD-II Reader

Have any of you used one of the more recent phone linked OBD-II readers? I've been looking at these for a while and noticed that prices are coming down and the numbers of models are going up. There are also more apps to link the readers and smart phones (and various parameters returned). Because there is an increasing number of offerings and a wide range costs, I thought I'd ask for opinions from those who have given them a try.

Broker on this forum has a Motorola Tablet with an OBDII connector. It's pretty sweet.

Yes I have one. I got a bluetooth OBI 2 reader. Just plugs in and bluetooths the signal to your cell phone. I actually use a 7" tablet and its pretty neat. The app TORQUE is awesome. It will read everything a shops readout will. Reset codes etc.

Only cost $30 for the reader and I think $5 for the app. Its good fun.

+1 for Torque app with the bluetooth OBDII reader from ebay. The things you can do with that app beyond code reading and clearing are amazing and the development of that app just keeps going and going. Only downside is all your friends will call you whenever they get a CEL on! Well worth the $20.00 or so investment.

I have the goLINK setup. Works great, however I now need an adapter to get the 30pin connector to work with my iPhone 5.

Hi all,
As you can see, this is my first post here... My name is tunin, I was looking for something else but bumped in to this thread... I like this BT OBDII thing... I tried the search but no results... Is tehre a TORQUE app for the iOS? Thank you.

Search OBD in the App Store. There are a number of offerings from free to $50. DashCommand is popular, but one of the more expensive apps; I'm not sure how it works and other details. There is something called iOBD2 that is free.

Any OBD2 Bluetooth should work with your car, your bigger area of concern should be finding an app that works with whatever Bluetooth unit you end up buying.

I believe the GoLink system is the only one that works with Apple's bluetooth. Apple only allows certain devices to connect to it.

Hello all, THIS ITEM is an update, I got this after doing some research and after seeing a guy on youtube using the exactly same unit and working with it with DASHCOMMAND and some other progs.

I tried tons of different combinations to get this unit to work, it just does not connect, I keep getting a PROTOCOL error... any input would be greatly appreciated.

Well the unit you linked to is Wifi, not Bluetooth. Are you trying to connect via Bluetooth on your phone, not Wifi? The unit I use with my Android looks almost identical to yours, but it connects to the phone using Bluetooth and was simple to set up and connects everytime. I don't know much about Dashcommand, so I can't help with configuration settings.

Hi, thanks for your input. it is WIFI I tried, over different forums I noticed that some units have problems with BT and iOS and that the DashCommander works better with the WIFI unit (apparently not_)... I do not think I can even use and Android based phone with the WIFI units as according to the tech specs of the Android SDK, ADHOC is not possible only routed WIFI connections.

If you root your android you can do ad-hoc That sucks you can't get it to work; this unit says it's for iOS and Dashcommand specifically. The only two things I can think is that this device doesn't specifically list the 4Runner as a supported vehicle. I can't see that making a difference since I used my OBD2 adapter in my old BMW when it wasn't listed as being supported by the adapter. I use the same adapter in the 4Runner with no issues. As long as the ISO protocol is supported, it should work.

The other thing might be a bad adapter. Quality on these things are notoriously hit or miss.

Yeah, it is sad, I waited 4 or so weeks for it to be delivered and only to find out it does not work. my field is IT so I tried a few things tricking it... did not help... the unit seams to behave as it should with the LEDs and all but it just gives me the protocol error after a while... I am communicating with the seller, I hope to get this resolved...
