Snorkel options that don't stick out past the roof line like the LC80s?

I've been looking into a snorkel after getting a front bumper, since the intake hole is exposed to the elements. I'm worried one of these days, i'll just hydrolock my motor with my luck.

With that said, I've looked into the LC80 snorkels but they stick out way past the roof of the car. Going to places where I occasionally need to park in a parking structure, I can't manage to have a snorkel that sticks out way past the roof like the lc80 does. Are there any other options for a snorkel that is low profile?

Example: This is the LC80 snorkel from another thread. See how it sticks past the roof line?

VS a snorkel on a tundra sits at or below the roof line...

Precursor, I've done no research on snorkels. I'm just thinking out loud considering what I know and what I've seen.

Good luck finding many options. I'm sure you know, it seems our 4th's really get the least amount of love in AM stuff compared to 3rd/5th's, and the snorkel seems to be one of the less popular mods acknowledged.

Not entirely aware of how, given the material of the snorkel, but could there be a way to hack up and "shorten" an LC80 one? Guessing it's plastic of some sort... Take an inch or two off below the "intake head", and reattach with JB Weld. Then alot of sanding/paint to make it look good. I've yet to see/hear JB weld failing on anything.

Trimming the lc80 snorkel does help. It is still higher than the roof, but it helps a lot. I trimmed about 1.5" off the top of the tube, then reinstalled the head. No JB weld or anything required. That was about as much as I could remove without modifying and bending or welding the plastic itself.

I just wanted to get the top level with the top of my roof rack.

What tires and lift are you running?

Dobinsons suspension with 677 long travel rear coils and shocks, and 300 coils/220 1” lift struts in the front. Technically 3” front and rear. After tires too I’m right at 5” over stock front and rear.

Tires are 255/80/17 Cooper ST Maxx.

I did the same as you for my LC80 snorkel and it sits about the same. I wish it was a little shorter but it's not the end of the world.

I've seen a few pics floating around on the web of 4th gen owners using 1st gen Tacoma and 2nd gen Tacoma Safari snorkels. They come out good but I didn't want to gamble with a $450 snorkel.

It's not too bad, depending on the angle you look at it from.

I made a detachable waterproof snorkel that can be stored in the truck when not driving underwater and installed in minutes when you need to cross a river. I had it made of 2.5" exhaust piping and I simply welded together a waterproof box with stainless studs that goes through the fender and attaches to a detachable cowl (gotta have that ram-air ) that bolts on when on no snorkeling is needed. more pics of the snorkel shortly.

Have this one on ours. I will try and remember to take a pic tomorrow. It does have the word “Powerful” molded on the side of it, or at least the one I got did. The one pictured does not have it. I sanded that off and painted the entire snorkle with Monstaliner to match the 4Runner.

Placed order and received it in about a week. Quality seems fine to me but I have never seen an ARB up close either.

Yea, trimming the LC80 snorkel just a bit was on my mind, but I didn't think it would bring down the ram low enough for my liking. Still a bit iffy on how high it overhangs the roof, but I appreciate the pics. Truck looks good setup how it is though :rockon:

I came across what the Taco guys are doing, and I knew you did the cowl intake too. I've thought about it, but not really the biggest fan of drilling a 3" hole above the firewall. But honestly, it might be the only option I like so far.

That's actually quite interesting, but seems a bit over my DIY skill level. haha

Also, I've seen some 4th gens with the LC80 snorkel that cut the snorkel down into the angled section and run the top hat backwards or to the side. This puts the hat in sort of an upside down position and much lower than how it is now. I'll try to find a picture of one like that.

Doesn’t fit up against the fender perfectly but it’s also not made for a 4 runner. Probably about 1/2” gap in back but not really noticeable.

Snorkel pics as promised. I'm still not sure what I want to do with the top of the snorkel. It seems like less water would get into it from splashing if its facing backwards, but definitely less air as well. There is definitely a noticeable drop in power with the snorkel installed vs. the cowl attachment.

Not for nothing

You can use a pool noodle inside the piping after trimming it a little (thae pool noodle) and a heat gun to soften and flex it where you want it to lay and then cold water with a rag to stiffen/ harden it in place.
