with snowboard season around the corner..

I'm looking to purchase an snowboard rack for my rig..

what does everyone use when they go up to the hills?

I found an oem toyota snowboard rack for $50 on craigslist..

or should i try for an yakima or thule rack?

No offense to toyota but racks are not their specialty. I see all these racks that look like they should be illegal, they're so sketchy.

I have my thule quad snowboard rack and I love it! Fits universally to bars. Its easy to install. And most important, doesn't look like a cheap piece of rubber. +1 for Thule
 
50 sounds like a fair deal.
I have a big Thule that I picked up on craigslist for 40 and I love it.
I think the most important things to check are:
1) That the rubber sufficiently protects you board/skis
2) LOCKS!
3) Its good to see if you have enough room under the rack to put your board or skis upside down without it hitting your roof. This is good if you need to fit 4 snowboards.
From my experience (I used to have a Yakima) They are all pretty much the same, I even think the toyota ones are made by Yakima. I like Thule because they are aluminum, I prefer the aesthetics and I have heard some stories of people who have had really bad customer service with Yakima.
Cant wait to go boarding, I am just praying it will be better than last season.

BTW the big Thules are on sf bay craigslist for about 50-60.

the ones in sac are a bit more than I wanted to spend on it..

however though, upon searching in the bay.. there are a lot more deals..

my question is though.. can I mount the thule snowboard rack with the oem roof rails?
 
Im a little too lazy to go take a picture of mine but I have the feet shown in this picture below and they mount on the stock rack no problem..

The big ones in this ad are the same ones that [MENTION=97939]TheArkMaster[/MENTION] and I have.
I know santa clara is hella far for you but these were the best ones I found.

I'd say go with the Thule and look for a pair on craigslist or a used set on ebay. I got mine for 75$ with the locks. People are always selling these. I use mine for fishing.
 
Thule, Yakima, generic, it really doesn't matter as long as it holds on to your sled. Craigslist is the way to go unless you want to blow a lot of money.

I also never locked my rack. First thing I did when I arrived at my destination is take my board inside or carry it with me. My setup is worth a lot of money (and worth more than money to me), and if someone is determined to steal it, a roof rack lock isn't going to stop them. Call me paranoid, but I just keep my board inside the vehicle.

I have the big thule's on the stock rack. works perfect.

do you not have the oem stock crossbars? Just go find them at a junkyard or find some used. No need to spend money on an aftermarket rack/crossbars.

my question is though, would i need new feet to attach the rack to the bars?

if so, which feet would i need to mount the rack on the stock oem bars?

I would toss the boards in the boot.. however though, the lady does pack a lot more things than i do when we go board lol..

plus sometimes her girlfriends comes along too and I'm the one with the 4wd... her girlfriends drive little Volkswagen and Corolla's..
 
I recently purchased a WMW full length rack for my 4runner with the idea that I would be able to throw boards up there in their bags with all my gear. I was tired of having to fold down the seats, not to mention being unable to take 4 people. I figured it would be good all around for camping and mountain biking as well, rather than having something that I put on my truck a few times a year that collects dust in the garage otherwise.

It's pretty pricey, but it's just another option to look at!

The regular stock attachment on the thule rack works and is what I use. It's the attachment that's in Yoters picture and what is on the large thule racks in yoters first CL link.

I'll take a couple photos when I get home (assuming it's not too dark... didn't drive the runner to work today)
 
I can't leave my babies on the roof unless they are in a box. Road salt, rocks, misc flying debris will wreck a board if done long term. Most boards fit diagonally in the back. A board bag will protect your edges as well as protect everything else from your edges.
 
well..

I got the guy down to $55 for the 30 in wide one with 2 sets of keys.. is that the going rate for it?

if so. I'm going to email him back and make an road trip for it next week.. since he is about 90 minutes away from me..
 
got an new question guys..

does anyone know what part # for yakima and thule I need to mount the rack to our stock oem cross bars?
