does anyone have any reccomendations for a snowboard rack for an 06 SE. i would like to transport 4 but 2 will suffice. and also what extra hardware would i need like locks or mounting clips if any???? thanks

I have the Yakima Big Powderhound which holds 4 snowboards or 2 snowboards and 2 pairs of skis. With the 4Runner factory crossbars you only need to buy the 10V might mounts to attach it. The total bill is about $150.

I bought the Yakima system when I had an Xterra but usually don't use it now because everything fits in the back of the 4Runner and doesn't get covered with salt from the road. My Malolo 162 snowboard fits so just about everything else should. Also, this past weekend I fit my board and 3 sets of skis in the back plus gear.

If you want it on top and want to protect your gear you can get a gear box that attaches directly to your roof rack. Check out RackAttack for all the options. I know guys that use Thule and like them as well.

I had Yakima Powerhound for 2 years. Work well, but after two salt winters I've changed most of the bolts and 7 out of 8 locks. No more! Now I'm using Thule Evolution 1600 box. First winter, no problems, my board, bindings are now clean and without rust. Before using Thule box, I had to wash and dry the board and bindings every time I got back home. There is also consumption benefit of the cargo box. I'm making 30+ trip per season to the mountains, each 150+ miles. With Yakima my consumption was 35-40% more then without ski rack on 90mph speed, with the Thule box, consumption gone up 5-10%. This will leave ~$300us in my pocket compare to previous winter with Yakima ones. With a price I paid for the box ($349), I got it FREE after one winter.

now you only have to find a way to save enough money on fuel to pay for all those mods!!

I agree that rust from the salt on the road is the biggest problem with the open air racks like the Powderhound. That is one reason that I just toss the gear in the back of the 4Runner. It is a little tight in the back with the 162cm board lengthwise but it makes it. I would love an enclosed box but I only have about 9in of clearance between the top of the rack and my garage frame. It would be a pain to have to take it on and off all the time. How much effort is it to take the Thule box off the rack?

Also, what Thule rack did you end up with? Do they need special adapters to attach to the 4Runner rack?

I have Thule Evolution 1600 Black.

I'm also parking my 4Runner inside the garage. It takes me 5-6 minutes to install it and 3-4 minutes to take it off and store in the back wall of my garage (all doing by myself, with two people it will takes twice less time).

It fix to stock crossbars with OEM Thule adapters, doesn't shake on high speeds and no sound at all, even with side windows open (I didn't open the sunroof - winter, snow, salt, but I think it won't be noticeable).

No way will I go back to Yakima racks. And yes, it may save me some money for future mods. ;):

I just ordered a Yakima Lift Ticket 6 package from ORS Direct. My understanding is that the Lift Ticket 6 is the Yakima's latest 4 board rack system. I paid $88, shipped for the rack, the locks, and the mounts for my 03 4runner, but I think that sale is over. Yakima's site said the msrp for that would be about $170.

You will also need the Fat Mouth FM1 adapter if you plan on attaching it to the stock rack. I just put mine on and can't wait to use it this winter !
 
I use the standard Thule Deluxe series snowboard rack.

It mounts and removes fast and stays put in high speeds on the highway and bumps.

Usually carry 3 board and 1 set of skiis on them.

I never got around to taking mines off since the snow season, it's still on my T4R.

My board is too long to fit inside without folding the seats. I ride a 162cm board and my buddy who's now riding alpine has 169 and 172cm boards. We just stuff the board in board bags and toss them inside. Only thing that sucks is I can only take two others comfortably in the 4Runner now. If the 4Runner has a 40/20/40 split like the RX330/350/400h, it'll be easier to get four comfortably in the 4Runner.

I'll probably go with a hitch mounted solution, since I plan on getting a mountain bike, so this way it'll do double duty. Not to mention, I've read roof mounted racks gets the gear really dirty and hits gas mileage significantly.
 
I use the older yakima buttondown 6, which are great. I have heard many problems with the lift ticket series (releasing on the highway), and actually the guys at my local rackattack suggested the older buttondown series which i found online for half the price.

The only problem i have with Yakima is that it is difficult to get 4 boards on the rack if any are wides. 4 regular is no problem, but my powder board is a 163 wide (rome flag) and it gives me problems except if i am pairing it with a short board like my wifes 148 on the same side.
 
BVG Revolution

I've been using the BVG Revolution for the last 3 years and it's worked great. I needed a rack that wasn't roof mounted since my wife would never have been able to get equipment up or down. The Revolution carries 4 bikes or 8 sets of skis or 4 snowboards or a combination. It is also one of the only (if not the only) hitch mountable carrier for the 4Runner since the spare tire mandates the mounting shaft on the carrier be very short. The sway-away feature is also nice to have since you can move the entire carrier out away from the car to open the lift-gate.
