Why do people convert the rear to a leaf spring when they do a SAS ?



There’s a lot of reasons. Mostly to match the front

The leaf setup is a lot stronger then the original links.

My front leaf setup with frenched hangers is about the lowest a leaf sas 3rd gen can get. When I had the long lc springs with a 1in spacer ontop. It was still sitting a few inches shorter in the rear and the short links where at a steep angle. Also the soft springs would sag a lot with any weight in the back.

First rubicon trip with the dual cases went great. Made such a big difference. The low range made the entire trail so easy, I didn't need to ride the clutch all the time, hill/ ledge descent was a dream.

I did notice the first transfer case occasionally did pop out of low when going down steep hills.
Ordered hd shift spring and might trim shift boot so nothing hits under load.

Might be the plastic shift cup in the top of the shifter housing.....mine disintegrated and it would pop out of gear on steep declines. You should be able to get one from Marlin.

I replaced the trans shift cup when I bought the truck at 220k. It was so disintegrated it was almost gone.

This is the reduction box shifter popping out under extreme load. Almost enough load to brake all four tires lose. Transmission stays in gear fine

I replaced the detent spring with a HD one and now the shifter is a lot stiffer and will not pop out easy. I may still need to trim the shift boots or somehow strap the motor/trans down better

Interesting. I read that, four link on coils is the strongest and best flex/ ride quality.

Not stock tinfoil toyota link setup. Yes it would be better to have custom long arm 1/4” dom links and heims with 3/8" thick mounts.
This would require link geometry and more cost. I would then have links in the rear and leafs in the front.

Yeah I agree. Stock ones are like tinfoil lol
 
Some maintenance and updates:
New led headlight bulbs
New rear hatch shocks
Drilled and tapped larger bolt holes in York compressor
Installed steering damper.
New front shackle bushings.

Been trying to get this thing to sit lower.
Put the short rear leaf shackles on. moved the lower shock mount to the front of the axle and lower for better angle and more uptravel.

Snapped a few studs on the rear 3rd member. Decided to drill and tap studs for larger button head bolts. Also noticed some of the ring gear bolts finger tight. I re torqued All bolts and checked gear pattern

Replaced front crank seal. had a super small leak
Replaced belts

Modified radiator to allow steering box to fit.
Notched driver and passenger side frame to allow more up travel. Used .25 wall sleeves for box mount bolts. Was able to Raised the steering box about 2in
Lowered shock mount for more up travel
Bent the drag link because it was hitting the oil pan.

Replaced ubolts bolts with ruffstuff 5/8
New 63 Chevy leafs with an add a leaf.

Replaced driver rear wheel bearing. It had a little play
