So Cal 4Runner BS Thread

That sucks to hear. Which model do you have out of curiosity? At some point I'm going to turn my Baofeng GT-5 into a loaner/ spotter radio and get a mobile setup. Just need to find a decent one that fits the budget and figure out what to do for the antenna mount/ location and decide if I want a magnet mount or drill a hole in the roof. Most of the mobile units aren't cheap!

Got mine cheap off a TW guy I know who was going to sell his truck. Mag mount for now, but I'm drilling a hole eventually. Just gotta wait for the good deals. He also did the resistor mod where I can transmit above 152.xxx I think it is. Good little radio, still trying to figure out how to use it, haha. Mostly I need to knock it down to 25 watts so I'm not transmitting so far outside of our group @ 60 watts.

I was looking at the $150-$200 units a couple days ago and I think that one and a cheaper Icom and a cheaper Yaesu came up. Some of the units you can adjust your power intervals at like 5w,10w,25w,60w etc. A couple of them were dual band UHF/VHF too.

Shame, that's not one of their cheaper units either!

Yeah this Kenwood only allows 25 or 60. I'm sure I'll upgrade eventually because being able to adjust 5/10/25/60 would be more desirable in local groups and keeping transmissions more local, although being able to transmit from Borrego Springs to Fish Creek was kinda cool, hahaha. 10w is about perfect otherwise. We need more of us with mobile setups, especially as our groups get larger it helps for missed turns or getting cutoff by a bunch of ******* jeepers and losing the group.

I'm with you on that one. I've been looking for awhile as well. Planning to study and take the ham test pretty soon.

I picked up that Android App that [MENTION=140870]Offcamber[/MENTION] recommended. I just do a test quiz here and there when I'm taking a shit or tired of staring at my computer screen at work. Almost passed one earlier, haha. I'm starting to recognize more of the abbreviations and terms that get repeated by different questions. Hope to have my license before JT in March.

Same here but puts me asleep. HAHA! I need to concentrate and get my mind right. I'm shooting the same time frame to get the license before JT....unless I get lazy! LOL!

Keeps me awake during work hours, although I am actually busy this week. hahaha.
 
Once you guys have your license, we'll geek out and get you set up with mobile APRS. Provided we there is a digipeater in range, we'll be able to track the guys who have it in case the group splits up. No more of that "three groups wondering around Truckhaven looking for each other" BS!

Hells yeah. I passed my first test exam earlier, but I still have another 200 questions I haven't seen yet, haha. Although with a good range and GPS coords we probably could have figured it out. Not sure how come the bronco group couldn't find us after I gave the gps coords.

Haha that's my mission tomorrow. I'll do some research on a good "starter kit". I get offended by that term but I figure it's a good place to start xD. I'll let you know what I find. Would be pretty cool if we did a meet up and sampled each others home brews before (or after) going on a run!

The starter kits are pretty legit from what I've looked at. It's getting everything right that matters. Temps, mixes, bottling..

I home brew. No crazy $10,000 set up, but I brew! The kits these days (said in old grandpa voice) are awesome. Buy "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" by Charlie Papazian. Then pull your wallet out and buy stuff!

I highly recomend glass carboys vs plastic brew buckets. And remember that the majority of the work is sanitization and sitting literally watching a kettle boil.
