Man, those look sweet but for $200, I'll have to think about it. I'll have to see how much of a pain it is to change the filter with the RCI skid plate I just put on there. If it's going to be an issue, then I might spring for a remote mount filter.

I love the top mounted oil filter on my Tacoma. There was no reason to drop the skids then. That is why I liked it.

What problem are we trying to solve here?

If saving a few minutes a couple times a year is worth changing a proven design and potentially creating warranty headaches down the road by all means, knock your self out.

It because of the mess created with the stock filters. No matter how hard I try I cannot avoid spillage. Never have that problem with spin on filters.

Not sure what they're peddling there. Is it just a oil container? If so how do you clean/replace the engine oil out of the engine system and not just the cell? I tried to find more information on it but it just looks like a giant filter they plug in... Not super confident in that.

You're still going to have a mess, probably more so than with a cartridge filter since you can't drain the oil from the filter before you unscrew it. It's facing downwards so it's just gonna spill all over you. I almost never have a mess with cartridge filters when you drain them correctly before hand.

I just wish they would of kept the filter on the top of the engine, hate having to drop the skid just for that damn oil filter. I've put anti seize on all the skid bolts so its not bad to get them out, just a pain that its required for a filter change.

Spin on filters have a higher tendency to leak from what I have personally seen. I have also seen people use the wrong socket to remove the cartridge type filters and completely strip the plastic threads which makes it fun/expensive to replace then.

Yeah, I also wish Toyota would've kept the filter up top. My 2008 is a breeze to change oil on.

Toyota still could've gave us a top mount oil filter, canister and all.

However, the oil changes are much easier with the RCI skid plate in place. Simply remove the oil filter door and it's right there. Definitely have to let all the oil drain out of the canister or it's just as messy as a spin on filter.

I don't have a 5th gen but I have a 3rd gen Tacoma with the same oil filter cartridge. I do hate the design. While I would not tamper with the design while it's under warranty there is no harm in replacing the plastic cartridge housing with an OEM Toyota aluminum one for $22.50:

I think we talked about this in another thread. Make sure the center support post is the same length as the filter cartridge you're replacing or just swap them over when you switch to the aluminum ones.

Wow. That's a good deal. The ones I posted above at $3.75 came from a Toyota dealer and they had a holographic tag on them. eBay is supposedly rife with counterfeit car parts so I'm careful.

The only advantage I can think of for the spin on filter is the fact that you can tell (by looking at it) if they actually change the filter at the "Name your place" oil change shop...

Exactly. People have no clue it's the filter media inside the oil filter that's important, not the ease of the oil change. Now, if you can guarantee me that the media is exactly the same as Toyota spec then sure, go ahead.

the only reason for this type toyota PITA filter is recycling of the filter.

this type is much better to reduce pollution and aids in proper disposal.

spin on filters all vary in quality. I have other vehicles with screw on filters and I also cut them open to inspect , media on the toyota filters is the same as the screw on's that I use .

If you have a vehicle with a screw on filter use the Wix XP series filters. synthetic media and very strong and full flow over 15K miles. made for use with long mile synthetic oil changes.

toyota filters more spillage IMO... and will the oil jockey replace those O rings or even the filter media ???
