I had about $15,000 into mine when it was written off, which included:

-purchase price, shipping, insurance, broker fees, importation fees & taxes, GST, de-crating, etc
-cost of flights, hotels, food, fuel to retrieve it from the dock in Vancouver, BC area
-headlights, corner lamps, DRL's, upgraded headlight bulbs (all to pass safety)
-new tires (265/75/16 Duratracs)
-complete baseline maintenance (diff fluids, tranny fluid change, LBJ's, tie rod end, swaybar endlinks)
-aftermarket cruise control
-command start/turbo timer/keyless entry
-OME 906 rear springs
-and parts for projects I never got to do

I ran into a similar thread in a different forum and decided to see how it went here.

I'm seeing most Gen 3 4Runners out there are selling on average between $5,000-$8,000 depending on mileage and condition. Of course, there are some selling for lower or higher than that.

The question is... Additional to your purchase price, how much did you really spend on it to get it to how you wanted it to be. This might be as simple as replacing brakes, wheels, tires, master cylinders, axles, etc, etc. to as complex as adding lifts, bumpers sliders, etc. It'll be different for all of course.

For some of these older 4Runners, all they need is a change of fluids and they are good to go, but most need a lot more than that even if you are aiming to keep it stock.

I stated what my purchase price was, nearly fifteen years ago. I was answering a question you asked. It looks like everyone so far has stated how much they paid for their 4Runner. I bought mine when it was brand new.

In the last fifteen years, maybe a couple grand on tires, and regular maintenance. There have been no serious repairs needed.

$40 for detailing and painting flares

So far I'm into it for around $7500, which isn't too bad considering I sold my truck (to get the 4Runner) for $7300.
I do plan on doing the TB/WP, a new bumper, and the 231mm upgrade. And if I can find a good deal on one, a supercharger.
I plan to drive this thing into the ground, so I am prepared to put some money into it.

Purchase price was $0 as it was given to me from my father who has owned it since new in 1997. It currently has the equivalent of about 110,000 miles and in the last two years of ownership I have put about $2000 into it including new tires, '99 tall coils and Rancho shocks in the back and regular maintenance and repairs. This was always a winter beater and still is, so rust is starting to win the battle, hope to get another 3-4 years out of it before the body and frame are toast.

02 Sport 4wd, auto. with 105k miles, paid $10k 4 months ago. It needed nothing, except new antenna, which he gave me, and all maintenance (timing belt, plugs, etc..) was up to date and done at Toyota. It's still stock.

A few days latter, I bought a wrecked 96 4runner for $600 but had to pay $40 to get it towed back to house.
I got my Downey off road Bilstein coil over lift kit and pan hard bar from it.
Parted the rest out for $3k

Got a free Sequoia Motor (see V8 thread) and sold my 3.4 motor for $1200

$150 for Eclipse Navaigation off forum
$400 for spidertrax
$80 for ghetto cold air intake
$40 for OEM floor mats

$100 for electrical compents for the swap (relays, fuses ,butt connectors, heat shrink tubing)
$110 for electric fans
$75 for new battery (when I first bought it)
$125 for ricer radiator
$100 to shorten drive shaft
$80 to have AC line made
$100 for the AISIN manual hubs
$120 for new wheel bearings

So I have about $2575 in purchases
plus the $6000 for the 4runner
For a sub total of $8575
minus (the sale of the motor, the parts runner) $4200

So I have a grand total of $4,175 in my ride.

Damn, that's a new 5th gen (without gas included).



Bought it initially for $8500, 4/2011 with 102k on it. I don't have receipts for the rest, but I'd say around $1300 including my lift, tires, wheels, sliders and random mods. It would be more, but I've bought and sold some parts that help bring the price down. Hoping to add a $1000 or so mod this winter to add some umph to her.

That means you've done roughly 60,000 miles since 2008 and drive a little over 15,000 miles a year. That's about 5,000 more miles a year than what I do.

I've been considering a 30MPG 2012 Subaru Impreza. Yeah, it's not a truck, but it can do almost everything I need it to do except wheelin', for $20,000 brand new. It's still more money than the 4Runner though, even after gas. I'd have to drive a 16MPG 4Runner for about 6 years to match the expense of the new Impreza in gas expenses. Plus, the truck is just cooler.

$6017 OTD last month for my '99 w/172k on it. Dumped the mall-terrain tires for some General Grabbers for $650, got a cargo cover at the junk yard for $75. Pulled the side steps off it for free.

I was going to put a bunch of money into new fluids last weekend but the dealer actually changed both diffs, the trans and the t-case as part of their 'free service'. I thought they just changed the engine oil, but I opened up the fill holes on all of them to check it out and sure enough they did what they said they did. A truthful dealer? :wow:
