Evening all my 4Runner heads! I finally had time this past weekend and installed the SPOD. It was a fairly easy job (2 hours altogether :bounce: ).
here is the SPOD mounted to the fuse cover. I drilled two holes and bolted the SPOD mount to it.
I then ran the SPOD cable through the firewall from inside the cabin. The firewall grommet is located l to the upper left of the brake pedal. I used a coat hanger where i taped up the plug and stuck it through the grommet by cutting it open a little because the plug is just a little bulky.
once the cable was inside, I ran it up the driver's side pillar where I had to take the cover off the A pillar, I used a really thin flat head screwdriver and pried the "SRS" cover off. It comes off really easy. I used a 10mm socket and removed the bolt and pulled the A pillar off from the top with minimal force.
with the A pillar cover removed, I pulled the rubber gasket off the door molding and stuffed the SPOD cable along the side going up.
I then ran the cable up the side of the window and up through the headliner.
This is a pic of the original SPOD switch panel. I removed the switches from the panel because theres no place to mount the entire panel shown.
I then opened the sunglass holder and removed the 2 bolts from the overhead console and pulled it off again with minimal force exposing a pocket where I ran the SPOD cable through.
with the entire overhead panel removed, I then unscrewed the sunglass holder off the panel and began cutting into it with a dremel after carefully measuring the size of the switches that I was going to install into it. After putting the switches in, I put the sunglass holder back into the panel where I then did plug the SPOD cable into the switches and screwed the overhead panel back into place (sorry, forgot to take pics of this step because I was focused on finishing the install).
heres what it looks like with the sunglass holder open.
i plan on replacing the switches shown with these switches that I purchased from otrattw.com once I figure out what plug on the back is for what
I really hope that my write up helps you and gives you an idea on how to install the SPOD giving it a nice clean and somewhat professional looking install. I installed the SPOD to make adding accessories an ease instead of running a million wires through the firewall. By adding the SPOD, theres no need to run wires into the cabin. The add ons can be connected to the SPOD installed into the engine bay.
