so I FLOODED my truck

Sh|tdamnit!
Well, it finally happened.
Lastnight around 7ish I get a call from a friend who is stuck in his 04 trd taco (2wd) in a nice little water hole/crossing. So i call another friend with an 04 f150 who has most of our straps since he get stuck the most ;-) , and we decide to both roll out there and see what the deal is and get our taco friend out.
My friend with the f150 lives about 8.5 minutes away, whereas im about 20... so he go there alot sooner and was able to extract the tacoma with no probs. So i get there and the tacoma and f150 are just chilling, and then me taco friend decides to charge the hole again, since eveyone is there anyways.... I wasnt in the mood at all for water or mud action, but once i saw my buddy in his taco (WHO NEVER OFFROADS) ready to charge the hole i got amped up and decided to try and shed some more light on the situation (since it was dark). I approach the water crossing from another side and am cruising fine in knee deep water with taller grass and mashed grass/mud bottom and then the NOSE DIVES. As soon as it dipped i hit the brakes and threw it into reverse to try and get out but it was too late.....
Less than a minute later water starts to seep in from the lowest front corners of the doors, black water. It flows in faster on the right since that side sunk 2-3 inches more....i got about six inches in the pass. footwell, it covered half of the front right JBL speaker and a portion od the rear. On the drivers side the water reached the lower tip of the gas pedal and some creaped to the rear, but not as much as the right rear.

So i sat in this hole for about an hour waiting for my friend with a rubicon to come and HOPEFULLY snatch me out. I was skeptical, but not as much as the jeep owner. The terrain he was pulling from was uneven and watery/soft. We tried a slow pull but that got us nowhere, but 2-3 small snatches and i was good to go. My front tires were submerged, totally out of sight and my rear was on fine ground (knee deep water, grass mud).
I dont know how deep the hole was, and dont care too :-) but its DEEP...
SO we drive to my friends house for the ufc fight (taco and rubi) and i leave the truck running for about 3 rs idling on full blast foot air on 75 degrees to work on drying out the carpet...well after about 3 or so hours i come out and the truck is no longer running, but only making ticking sounds, so im kinda worried. I thought at first i ran out of gas, but rememberd i had about a half tank, and idling for 3-4 hours wont drink all that down.... so im starting to think electrical EEK :nono: It was strange bc even without the key in the ignition the CEL/ AT oil temp were on which was weird....
So I leave it overnight with the windows down for drying out, and wake up in the morning to the abs system making noise , like its trying to work but for what......meanwhile there is NO key in the ignition, this is the truck just sitting, indicator lights still on......
Now we start looking under the carpet/moldings to see where the ecu was or hopefully wasnt and find the source of issues...

So to the damage/ issues:
1) the water was 6+-" deep in the pass. foot well (half way up the jbl speaker), and after taking the trim out down there I saw that there ARE HEAVY PLUGS/connectors down there...disconnect them and water and black mud particles come out. im like well fvck. there were 3-4 and i disconnected them all, shook as much water and shat out as i could and then sprayed wd40 in there to displace the water and push it out, which worked amazingly..
2)the pass speakers were both under considerable water and I didnt expect them to make, but they did! so good there.....

3) THE MAIN ISSUE: CARPET DAMAGE & CLEANSING
Im looking at taking out my seats, front two and rear bottom ATLEAST and removing all the carpet. There are mud particles and water chilling underneath the carpet and padding as we speak which i am not cool with. This is not something ive ever done, never wanted to do and am not looking forward too. I feel like its gonna be hard to get the truck interior, carpet mostly, back in as tight as it was. However, I HAVE NO CHOICE but to take it out and clean the crap out of the floor of the truck AND the carpet itself. I dont know how much a new carpet molding is but im sure it aint cheap (unfortunately).

So I would like to hear from anyone who has dealt with some water on the interior and MOST specifiaclly how the removal of the carpet in a 4th gen goes......
Im sorry for the LONG ASS post, but im kinda scatter brained on this right now and I may have left some stuff out, BUT IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WATER & INTERIORS PLZ help me out.

I have a small wet/dry vac ready and thats about it, I need to get some carpet cleaner. I think im gonna dedicate this whole week to taking care of this. If you read all this I appreciate it, and THANKS to anyone with advice.

pics of the outside waterline and me stuck to come soon.

Sorry to hear...crap, good luck in cleaning it. I would stop by your local carwash place and ask their advice in cleaning it. I heard that baking soda is pretty good at soaking up the moisture and smell. After cleaning the plugs, do you still have the christmas tree lights on the dash?

Oh the joys of wheeling in FL. Killed my old Ranger in deep water one time so I feel ya. What was ford thinking putting the air box on a 4x4 at tire level?

Take it up to Sparkle and Shine in Ormond to get it cleaned up.

As awful as it sounds some disassembly is in order. I'd pull the door panels and carpet (front seat removal required). clean it and let it dry before re-assembly. That's the only way I know to do it right.

The saturated insulation will "never" dry in time to prevent mold/mildew. Plus there's potential corrosion issues.

Just my 2cents. Good Luck

I'd pull the door panels off and take apart the speakers, too....you know dry them off, clean the engine real good and pull the carpet and clean it for a week, get it nice and dry....How's your 4runner running now??? Any better??

Yeah the truck runs normal now, and no more lights on the dash with or without the key in the ignition. It was acting weird UNTIL those plugs got dewatered.
I am planning a total cleansing, seat, carpet and I guess door panel removal too. This sucks but it must be done! I think ill probably end up replacing the spongey padding underneath the carpet.
Thanks for advice guys, and Ive got a friend with a carpet cleaning business so once i get the carpet out ill have him go to town on it so its mostly the removal and reinstallment that scares me.
Im starting right now, w/ Pics.

Oh man , I was just cringing reading this ......... hopefully no more issue and the truck will be ok.

The part that sucks the most about this is when you go to resale it. A dealership is going to think it is a flood vehicle. Which would would mean a very low trade in $$$.

Well, ive run into a couple of issues.
1) I cant totally remove the front seats, there is a chord with no clips that I cant find the origin or the end of it, so i can move them around quite a bit but not take them all the way out of the truck. Its not the big of an issue, ive done well so far with the limited mobility......

2) Ive been pulling all the insulation, which was still SOAKED and am gonna rinse it thoroughly, clean it with soap/shampoo and then put it all back in, either that or just buy new........

but

3) i was able to get the insulation out everywhere but the drivers foot well, because the panel on the left is held on by a screw which is also attached to the drivers foot rest. I cant see, or figure out what type of tool to use to get that off and then peel the insulation out there.
EDIT__ PROBLEM SOLVED- it just pulled straight off :-D

everything will dry ALOT faster with the insulation out and seperated. I could just say forget it but i like the sound dampening and cushion ;-) why not........Ive got both back seat bottoms out and ive shampooed the entire carpet once and wet dry vac'd it. Im going to do it atleast once more time today and 2-3 times per day for the next 3-4 days. Hopefully by that time the carpet smells like a clean hot chick and ive gotten the insulation sorted out.....

Thanks for the input guys! THIS SUCKS!

Ray

Oh yeah, im not worried about trade in or resale value as the truck will be modded so much by that point that it would be pointless..... so ill either keep it forever as is or take it to the enxt level and straight axle or whatever

Ray,

I thought of another thing... How deep was the front? What I'm getting at is whether you should check the front axle, trans and t-case fluid for contamination. If you haven't extended the rear breather I'd check the rear axle fluid too. Good Luck!

PS- It'll be a PIA to get your 4Runner cleaned up but if you work hard and fairly quickly :dammit: it'll truly be good as new. Don't get discouraged. The only long-term thing you may see is a pre-mature starter failure. If you are good with starters etc. I'd recommend pulling it and taking it apart for a thorough cleaning. That may be overkill... I would, at the very least, pay very close attention to starting behavior. It will give you a warning if you pay attention.

Follow the wire under the seat. If you cut a couple of zip-ties you'll be able to get the seats. It'll be worth it, trust me. (Been there:D )

I had the pax seat out of my '07. It did require leaning the back and working under the seat to free the wires.

I have a service coming up anyways, so by the time i get my truck clean enough and put back together ill probably take it straight in.... Ill ask them to look at these things. Where are access point to these? I mean I can check for contamination atleast...... My rear breather is extended, and the water wasnt deep enough to be concerned about either breather or the cold air intake "". I mean there was a fair amount of truck under water..... it ran for about one hour in park in the stuck position, is that a time that water could enter these areas? The whole time it sat in the hole it never once stuttered or acted strange.. I was waiting for it.

PICS

Here is the shot that my friend got off... and a zoom on the fron bumper.

Im gonna basically bust my ass continually for the next 2 or so days getting this back to perfection. After one day much progress has been made...

cj3flyr: im thinking the wire is for the dvd players in the headrests bc i follow it up as far as i could, unzipping some of the leather..... Honestly im feeling like I can do just as good of a job without full frt seat removel and the help of a friend ;-) today after removing the foamsponge insulation, rinsing with fresh water (after removing all 10 drain plugs), shampooing, dry vac'ing and then blow drying on high with a 36" industrial fan i feel like progress wont be as slow going as I thought and the real concern is going to be if my truck can go back together as tight as it was before.... IM HOPING and will be doing only my best.
But ill take a pic of the wire/cable, its just black and solo.

Ray,
I am sure you are right on the wires. I don't have a DVD setup so I can't offer much help.

To check for fluid contamination on the t-case and front axle you have to undo the fill plugs and stick your finger in there. If it's a white/grey mess then you contaminated them. As far as the tranny goes warm it up, run it through the gears, put it back in Park. Leave it running and pull the small Allen screw that is recessed into the trans pan. A bit of clear, pinkish hue fluid will run out. If it's white/grey/gloppy you've got contamination.

For the axle and t-case plug locations look around the maint posts. I'm sure someone has posted the pics.

The good news is the vents that may have leaked water into the axle/t-case are on the driver side fender and from your pics you might be ok.

Good luck!

Glad you were able to make it out with little to no damage.

Reminds me of my adventures....

OMFG! How was your truck after that? good I hope

Here's my waterline shot

Im making progress cleaning out my carpet and the underlying insulation foam. Im doing it a couple of pieces at a time, rinse rinse rinse until it drains clear instead of brown black :-O and then hit er up with shampoo rinse again and then to the industrial fan for drying...... whew.

Chris, ill check those spots out before i go in for servicing and hope that they all check out right. Its good to hear that the vents werent in the worst of locations :-) thanks man

Your axles should be able to handle being in water, wouldn't hurt to check though. I would check the wheel bearings though, and pull the boots off the CV joints, to make sure there is no water sitting in there. And maybe take some brakekleen to the rotors, they'll rust up in a hurry inside. Thats too bad about the carpet. I soaked a truck with carpet a few trucks ago. I pulled the carpet after I realized that pad was never going to dry out. Went to Napa and ordered a bunch of those stick on insulating pads that you cut to fit and threw the carpet back over them. I'm glad I took that carpet out, I couldn't belive all the indentation in the floorboards that still had water in them. Good luck!

yeah man they are SUPER SPONGES!!
Im thinking that ill do either that same thing or go to an auto upholster and pick up EXTRA to put ontop of or below the refurbished stock stuff, might as well double up while im in there.
Do you know the name of the stuff you got? Has anyone ever used dynamat?

I wish I could tell ya the brand name, but it was almost ten years ago......They were the cheapest generic ones I could find, something like the Dynamat stuff, but less costly. (note that the quality also followed the price). I just wanted it to work though, and thats what it did. You may also want to try a detailing shop. They have vaccum extractors that can get a lot of moisture out. I had that done to a car with cloth seats and a sunroof that was parked in the rain with the sunroof open.

no worries :) im gonna go to autozone tommorow and ask those fellas and pick up some oil. Let ya know what they can come up with

whats everyones opinion on this kind of imsulation?
