So this is kind of a noob 5speed question...

Never thought I would end up with a 5speed Runner while I was searching but landed one. Only been off-road with it a few times and the last was the most intense. Steep hills/ e-locker. It was a lot of fun but challenging with the 5speed. Got stuck a few times in the middle of the hill and getting back off the clutch was difficult. The truck wanted to roll back five feet by the time I could get on the gas!

How do you 5speed guys do it? Use the e-brake? Any tips you guys could throw at me for use of the 5speed in this and other off-road conditions? See, told you it would be a noob 5speed question:D

Thanks,
Mason

yeah dont be afraid to slip the clutch, and learn how to use the brake and the gas at the same time with the same foot... also learn your clutch and where it grabs... while i dont have a 5speed in my runner, my runner is the only vehicle i own that is an auto... i have two 85 pickups that i wheel and i wheel them just as hard as the runner. i have put in heavy duty/over kill clutches(centerforce dual friction) in them both, and know that i can use and abuse them all day long and they will not fail on me. i have actually gotten them to the point where i the fluid boiled and got air pockets in it -had to bleed the clutch, but the clutch disk itself was still holding the power once i got it in gear -that was the hard part because no "hydraulics".

it will take time and you will learn by doing it over and over again, the more you drive your rig in differing environments the better you will learn how to control it. i do not think what you are asking can be simly answered and "fix for next time" by anyone on the forum, it is something that you will have to learn what works for you. you might burn through a clutch learning it though. it deffenatly takes "technique" and some times those are easier learned through trial and error than reading what to do and how to do...

I think you have run into one of the specific uses for the clutch start cancel switch, or at least a good excuse to use it. When stuck on the hill turn off the motor and press the clutch start cancel switch. Put the truck in 1st gear and then crank her up while giving her a bit of gas and you should pull up the hill with no rollback. Clutch start cancel comes in handy when you really need to be hitting the brake and gas at the same time, which when you factor in the need for the clutch becomes impossible. Also nice to start it in the winter when you don't want to climb in a push the clutch.
