SO what does everyone use to clean their engine?

Out fixing a few things today and getting rid of vacuum lines. I could not help but notice how nasty my engine is (runs great though).

What would you use to clean this:





I went through some water (imagine that) last time it was out and now I have this white film on everything.

I have also used Gunk before. Worked ok. Used the 'Steam' version u apply to a hot engine. Its a foam. Used regular Gunk on everything else. Have also used Clear Magic and Super Clean with very good results.
 
Dawn dish soap with water in a sprayer. 50/50. Works great for me. I've used gunk, it'll leave a smell for a while.
 
degreaser and a heated pressure washer.. i have access to these at work and its great. after its clean. after every trip i just use the pressure washer to blast away the dirt
 
I just pop the hood when I need to wash off the built up trail mud at my local car wash.

I set the wash to 'Engine Cleaner', and let it sit while I do the rest of the truck. When I'm on the high pressure wash I hit the engine being careful not to blast the electrical areas.

You're back! Where's the Moab pics and trail reports?
 
Learned from experience to cover alt. and dizzy with plastic bag before wash. I found Por's Marine Clean works well, dilute with water about 4-5 to 1 part solution. Make sure to rinse thoroughly. I also take Tire Care after and spray liberally then run a cloth over surfaces but not necessary, found it puts new life into hoses, vac lines, belts; and puts a shine on the engine and other engine components; my quick and easy engine detail.

Sorry we didn't get a chance to explore more of Colorado's trails as the Badger was running rough. Turns out that OEM spark plugs are THE only way to go on my 93. That's another story.

We did spend three days at Cripple Creek camping at over 10,000 feet. Was a nice change from the heat of the Moab!

Steam cleaner works the best, you can rent them for a couple hours and it's not too expensive.

I use to spray down the frame rails and engine compartment with WD-40 back in the day. Dust will collect to the residue after a while, but nothing will stick hard. After wheeling, all the junk will hose right off without much pressure needed.
 
as someone stated, a degreaser with hot water from a normal hose sprayer is sufficient - I also have access to these items at work

a light brushing on stubborn/heavy deposits is fine, just be aware of electrical connections, distributor, etc...blow off with compressed air and hit any missed spots again

judging from your first photo you're gonna want to clean up your battery terminals - get em nice clean and shiny, retighten and spray with corrosion block or a little light grease to prevent future corrosion
