Ian97... There is one thing should should consider if you have an A/T. Once these super reliable 4R's get past the 100k mark they can be prone to radiator problems that allows the radiator coolant to mix with the tranny fluid. This will ruin your tranny and cost you headaches and $$$.

It's a good idea to install a separate dedicated tranny cooler and bypass the stock set-up. It's not very expensive ($60) and you can install it your self easily. Cheap insurance to keep your rig healthy for another 100k.

mine is still a baby at 116K but wouldnt hesitate to drive it cross country any at all. love this truck. Im terrible about buying a truck and trading in a year or so but this is year 3 with my 3rd gen and dont think ill ever get rid of it:nerd:

I've literally driven COAST to COAST in my 97 T4R. I live in Chicago and have made the roadtrip from Chicago to DC and then Chicago to PHX/LA/Las Vegas and back.

Just make sure all your proper maintenance is taken care of.

agree, i have 266.000 and drive 100+ mile trips all the time.

I may be way off but i feel like the city driving i do around home is more harmful than my highway driving.

250K and drive it everywhere I go, don't matter if it's snowboarding @ Vail or Steamboat or camping in Moab, or a wedding in the dakota's. what else am I supposed to drive, a rental?????????:flipoff:

With 174k on my 97, I loaded up and drove from cleveland to vegas to slc to south east idaho back to cleveland. It was awesome!

The month before I left, I changed out the radiator and added a dedicated tranny cooler, new timing belt, seals, water pump, and added an in-line tranny fluid filter...which i later bypassed. Was a lot of fun to do the work myself.

The only problem I ran into after the service was in Las Vegas. I ended up having to replace the fan clutch.

I make regular trips to North Carolina from Delaware to see my parents and I have 227,xxx miles. My 02 GTI only has 122,xxx miles and I trust my 4Runner more than my GTI on that trip.

I had to replace my fan clutch after my last Georgia trip. It was overheating on the way down, while I was there, and on the way up. Not fun!

With almost 240k on the odometer and a slight oil leak, I routinely drive all over the country...last year I did 4 trips to NY and 1 trip to Denver along with all the other various trips around the southeast...total of about 50k last year. No problems, no worries, and no car payments! In NY and Denver I went wheeling too...not even a second thought. This is the best built vehicle I have ever owned!
