I've actually never been to Big Bear or any of the trails around there. Of we are doing Clarkes Grade like suggested before I don't think you should have any problems. Sounds/looks pretty moderate to me..

Ive done this trail once with pikeman leading, in my stock 5g and it did just fine, Id definitely like to do it again cause since then the truck has been lifted.

Set it for August 4, 2012 and let's just make it happen. It seems that every time one of these meet/runs comes around there is a loner thread of people jogging dates around.

Sweet since youve done it before and our down to go we have our trail leader. Now all we have to do is set a time to meet and meet up place for August the 4th. Since youve done the trail where is a good place to meet and what time would you like to meet up?

That's fine I'm sure we can manage. I got a couple buddies going and they've done bear before just not this specific trail. I've got a map ao I'm sure it should be fine.

August 4th at 9:00 AM (please try to be on time)
Easy trail run going from Angelus Oaks up to Boulder Bay area of Big Bear. Route will be Middle Control Road to 1N09 to 1N54(Clarks Grade) Some may prefer to park and enjoy Lunch or afternoon meal in Big Bear. With a large turn out it may take longer then anticipated to complete the trail. Please be prepared for varying weather and enough food and water to last the entire day.

Difficulty:
Low to Medium depending on weather damage.

Meeting Location:
34754 Mill Creek Rd
Mentone‎ California‎ 92359
(This is actually a Forest Service station)
It is right after Bryant street on the right hand side and won't be hard to miss!

Are you interested in dirt roads (easy - very little articulation) or some trails with articulation?

Most of the easy ones, including Miller can be driven by any two wheel drive with good tires and some care. There will only be a trickle of water this time of year.

Jacoby would be my best recommendation. I love that trail and have taken many stock trucks thru there and you cant damage you truck but gives a great intro to offroading a capable stock offroad truck like a 4R. Even with stock wheels youll be fine. In snow season its a lot of fun!

To get a general lay of the land I would suggest Skyline and Clarks Summit and also cruising to the other side of the lake for 3n16. There are many campsites off 3n16 and you will pass several trailheads as well. I would highly recommend Jacoby as a beautiful easy trail in summer. Its well shaded and ideal for a picnic. It has some nice articulation for a stock truck. Its doable to do all this in one day if you started in Big Bear at around 9am and went thru to late afternoon.

Depending upon where your coming from heres how I would do it

Start by doing Jacoby then cruise around 3n16. Head to town for lunch then depart by leaving via Skyline or Clarkes Summit.

My offroding calanedar is kinda full at the moment but if I can swing it I might be able to join ya and show you some of the trails.

I do suggest you get map from the Big Bear Visitor center, and also Charles A Wells book - Guide to Southern California Backroads and 4 Wheel Drive Trails. With these two resources you can know before you go.

It's a good run. Not too bad and just right for those who don't want to trash their rig.
Just remember to go left at the fork in the trail. The meeting spot is the ranger/info station. Don't know if we still need an adventure pass but they are only like 5 bucks I think.

I bought one at Sport Authority for 5 bucks but when I asked the guy told me it is only necessary only if we plan on parking and leaving the vehicle. If you just tell them your not sure which day you are going then they wont scratch the date off on the pass and you can just use it when you absolutely need to!

If you go hiking often, or just 5 times then you break even with an annual pass of $25. OR get an annual pass plus extra car and split it with a friend. The extra pass is 5 bucks... so $30 total. 2 people need to go 3 times each to break even.

I don't have a CB radio so I bought one of these from Amazon: Midland-75-822-Channel-CB-Way-Radio

I plan to get it hooked to my rig eventually but hopefully it will work good enough for this application. Reviews say it's not that great in car unless I have an external antenna but we'll see.

Anyone have experience with this radio?
