Here is a site with some beta on the Rincon Shortcut OHV route that chiefiji mentioned:

I like the Anza-Borrego area, I seem to remember it being only about 2 hours from Pasadena. It would be very convenient for people from the OC and SD areas. One nice thing about this area is that there are lots of roads down in the flatlands where the major hazard would be getting stuck in sand. If a 2WD vehicle got stuck it would be a lot easier to give them a tow in these areas than on some mountain road.
