I like the Anza-Borrego area, I seem to remember it being only about 2 hours from Pasadena. It would be very convenient for people from the OC and SD areas. One nice thing about this area is that there are lots of roads down in the flatlands where the major hazard would be getting stuck in sand. If a 2WD vehicle got stuck it would be a lot easier to give them a tow in these areas than on some mountain road.

So, we have 10 people who indicated that they were up for a 1-day (or longer) off road trip. I am sorta suggesting Anza-Borrego.
How many of these 10 would find Anza-Borrego close enough to be suitable?
 
Yup, I'd be in even though it would be a +3.5 hr drive for me.

No problem. Maybe catchup with some people half way there. Grab a Starbucks for the drive.

If everyone who is interested could post the city where they are it would help in selecting a meet location.
 
I'm in San Diego. Anza might be too far if it's 3 hrs from LA, thats like another hour for me. But I wouldn't mind the drive so much if I could meet up with a few other T4R guys for starbucks on the way up.

Anza-Borrego, East of San Diego

Anaza-Borrego is South of LA, East of San Diego. Someone in San Diego could get there in less than 2 hours.

To get to the north entrance (Borrego Springs) someone in SD would take the 8 East to the 79, the 79 North to Julian and then the 78 East.

One nice thing about Anza-Borrego is that inside the (huge) state park only street legal vehicles are allowed on the trails.

sounds good to me! i'm in west covina. the drive sounds like a good comprimise for the LA/OC and SD guys.

so anza-borrega, jan 23rd. lets set this as a tentative date and location and see how people respond to it. i might even think about camping out on the 22nd if this goes down, got inspired after reading the camping in the 4runner thread :D

I'm in Agoura Hills - the west side of LA county, very near Ventura County. I'll look on my GPS for the most direct route and maybe suggest someplace to meetup with those traveling that direction.

Is anyone taking a 'significant other/s' ?

Look forward to meeting you guys and having some fun in the dirt.

let me know how you plan on getting there. i did a quick mapquest and it looks like i'll be taking the 60, 57, 91, and 15 freeways.

i'll see if i can sucker my gf on going on another one of these trips. otherwise i might bring my dog instead :D .
 
OK, so it looks like we are planning a drive on the 23rd and probably in Anza-Borrego. My wife says that she will come. Everybody should bring camp chairs and a lunch and we will have a picnic lunch somewhere out in the desert.

I have the book Southern California Backcountry Adventures which describes some of the trails in Anza-Borrego. I also have some maps and notes from my couple of trips out there. We can find all types of trails from dirt roads that can be negotiated in 2WD to trails that eat stock SUVs.

An interesting trail that is on the way out there from LA is Palomar Divide Road. It leaves Hwy 79 and then rejoins it after 22 miles of dirt road. The book I mentioned gives it a difficulty rating of 3 - High-clearance 4WDs are preferred. If I can talk my wife into going out a day early I would like to try that. This would depend though on finding an open campgroung in Anza-Borrego for the night as the wife is not keen on wilderness camping, especially alone.

At the moment it seems we have 4 people who are interested; anyone else?

dcampen, let me know if youre going to go a day early. i'm down to drive the palomar road and camp. ive driven another trail in the book that's rated 3, the main divide road, and the 4runner handled the trail easily in stock form.

i'll make a post in the announcement section so more people can see it. this section is sorta hidden so hopefully posting on in announcements will draw more attention.
 
Anza-Borrego

I'll see if there are any campgrounds available in the park for the night of Saturday the 22nd. If I can get a campsite with fire ring and pit toilets then I can probably convince my wife to spend the night there. So, maybe I will know by this time next week if I can go a day early. Also, if anyone is bringing a dog we will have to check and see what restrictions the park has - staying on leash etc. I don't think that there are any restrictions on girlfriends and SOs as long as they are reasonably well behaved.

One trail described in Backcountry Adventures that would be nice is the Arroyo Salado Trail: 14 miles, 2.5 hours. Difficulty rating of 3 and Sccenic rating of 9. I drove this road just a few weeks after I had gotten my 4Runner. Except for a few sandy places this trail would probably have a lesser difficulty rating of 2. It can be traveled without any worry of damage to the vehicle, there were only a couple of short places where the canyon walls narrowed enough that I had any concern about scraping the sides. 2WDs should be fine as long as there is a 4WD truck and tow straps available in the, probably unlikely, event that a 2WD gets stuck in a sandy spot. This trail travels through the washes of the Borrego badlands and past several Palm oasis and also goes to a place called the Pumpkin Patch where there is a field of weirdly eroded rocks.

I reserved a campsite at the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground for the night of Saturday, 22 January. They allow up to 2 vehicles per campsite so if you come out then I can share. You should try to get your girlfriend to come. The campground has toilets and showers and the campsite will have a picnic table and fire ring.

I have been looking at a map I have, "Map of the Anza-Borrego Desert Region and adjacent areas" by Wilderness Press. There are so many trails in the park that instead of the Palomar Divide Road on Saturday it would be fun to try some of the other trails in the park. One interesting route to try would be Buttes Pass (dirt) Road to Cut-Across Trail and see if we can take that to Arroyo Salado.
