Awesome! I like it- simple and effective.

Aftermarket Backup Camera Added to Factory Nav!!!

Pretty proud of this one. Seeing as how my swing out and spare tire now covered my factory backup camera, I decided to add a new aftermarket one instead of relocating the factory one.

I used an Alpine HCE-155 camera and Alpine's KTX-C10LP license plate holder which also serves as the mount for the camera. Wiring was really not that bad. Simply pulling the nav unit, locating the OEM Video + and Video - inputs, cutting them, and splicing in the new video cable.

I'm starving so I gotta run, if you would like more details, lemme know and I will post more.

Now that this is done, I have a 4 way mobil video switch unit I can use to integrate a front camera, and DVD player in combination with the "anytime reverse camera" mod. That is for another day...

I would like to thank J.A. for his help also!!!

Here are some pics:

Dude I'm really going to miss your thread when you finish all your mods....:ohwell:

Yeah, SOcal's working on another level. At some point I expect to see a thread that goes something like, "So, I decided to just go ahead and fab up an entirely new truck..."

This is just what I want to see. This is on my list of to dos. But if I use the license plate camera it will be pointed to the passenger side. I am going to try and just get a small camera and mount it on the Jerry can holder pointed straight back. Hopefully I will be able to splice the new camera into the existing wiring to view it in the rear view mirror. Or I just can wait for my NAV head unit.

Well done as always good sir.

Sooooo I played around with the firestone rear air bags this weekend and decided against them. For what I do with my truck, I just don't see them lasting.

Ended up finding some OME 2896 rear coils for cheap so I snagged em, I know a few of you are running the 895 coils with success, anyone running the 896's??? They are the same height with a 58lb increase in spring rate. According to OME, they are made for vehicles carrying up to 440 lbs constantly. I figure I am pretty close to that so I'll give them a shot and see if it aleviates the saggy rear that I am now getting with my Icons.

May I ask, what exactly made you apprehensive about installing them? After I saw you talking about these in the other thread, I was thinking about throwing them in for the hell of it when I install a lift in the rear, but maybe not anymore :)

Well... a couple of things.

First. I did the install, got everything bolted up and flexed out my suspension with the forklift to see how the bags reacted to extreme compression and extension. What I noticed is the bag grabs on the coils and remains at the bottom of the coil while the coil extends, thus drawing the air hose down into the coil, and pushing it back out when the spring compresses back. Talking to a couple other guys, this can lead to a couple problems... Namely, wearing the hose out from rubbing back and forth. Also, if there isn't enough slack, the hose can be ripped right out of the top of the air bag. No bueno.

Second, I think the air bags are great for someone who carry's heavy weight like a heavy tongue trailer occasionally, but for someone who is running a heavy truck all the time with armor, bumpers, etc, the airbags, it seemed to me like a fix for the issue of sag, but more of a "band aid" fix. I need to adress the actual issue at hand which is increasing my rear spring rate.

I should have the OME 2896 rear coils next week to install, they run about 100 lb higher spring rate than the Icons with supposedly a 2" lift.

If these are too stiff, I will jump down to the 895 springs.

I'll post my results.

Wow, it's a good thing you tested it out so thoroughly; sounds like you'd likely tear a hole in it if you kept them aired up while out on the trails. I guess I am definitely not going to bother with these since I never plan to tow.

If the OME 2896 are the same length as the Icons you have, you would probably more than alleviate the sag with the higher spring rate; I guessimate ~40" static height @ the rear fender (based on your current load you provided in that other thread).

Have you ever thought about trying one of these spacers on the passenger side to fix the unevenness?

OME FJ rear trim spacer - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits

No clue on reliability or effectiveness of said spacers, just happened to come across it last time I was browsing for a new suspension.

Or I guess you can start packing on the pounds to induce some drivers side lean after you hop in :hungry:

Well, it wasn't exactly a scientific test by any means, but it kind of demonstrated the very very very slight potential for an issue, and made me realize that I actually just really need new rear springs:doh:

If the 896's get me back to where I was pre-rear bumper / armor days, I will be a happy camper. If they turn out to be too stiff I have the option of the 895's too which are a 260lb rate spring, 2" lift. It will be interesting to see how they feel on there, I don't want to run something too stiff, yet I dont want to bottom out so easy…. I estimate I have added approx 850 lbs +/- of goodies to my truck, how it distributes between the four corners, I do not know. When I go on trips, I probably have an adittional 50-200 lbs of crap as well depending on the situation. I am thinking the extra poundage of the 896's should be pretty close to being correct, time will tell.

I could in theory put on 100lbs of body weight to help balance the truck out…. haha good call!

"New" Rack Mounted LED

Well, after a lot of research, I pulled the trigger and bought my new LED light bar for the top of my Gobi. Originally I had four 6" Rigid SR lights, but I wanted MORE!!!!

Just received today, a 18" Vision-X Xmitter Xtreme with a custom optic configuration. The outer 6 emitters on each side are 40 degree and the remainder of the inner emitters are 10 degree spot optics. This bad boy has 30 5-Watt emitters for a total of 14,790 lumens!!! That is double what I had with the four Rigid 6" bars. That is also more output that a 40" Rigid SR and almost as much as a 40" E-Series!!!

Now tomorrow I get to figure out how to mount this beast up on that rack!

Next upgrade will be to 10 watt. Talk sbout stupid amount of lumens. Can't wait to get mine. I am going to go with the Wurton 40" soon. Then going to go with a 20" on the front bumper.

Stupid amount indeed! I couldn't wait to install it so I ran a pigtail off my battery posts last night to see how it looked, it is insane….

I had a pretty lengthy conversation about the whole 5W vs 10W LED thing and it sounded like the 5W LEDS were the way to go. The 10W LED's definitely put out more lumes per emitter, but at the cost of taking up more space = less emitters per given light bar dimension.

Here is a little info from Vision-X.

"Why Xmitter Prime XP
The Xmitter Prime XP Bar achieves the farthest lighting distance and brightest output in the Vision X Light Bar lineup. This is due to the 5-watt LEDs that are placed much closer together on the circuit board than 10-watt LEDs allowing for greater optical control and therefore greatest distance. The Xmitter Prime also makes use of Prime Drive Technology which manages heat levels to prolong the life of the LEDs."

I have the 896's installed but without any true weight in the rear. I can't stand it! but for what you are doing and having the right kind of load I bet they would work nicely. My issue is that without weight on large bumps I can feel the shocks maxing out and making a bumpy ride. Although when I have gear or a heavy load in the back it settles and rides as well as the front.

I guess I need a rear bumper....

Thanks for the input, good to hear from someone who is actually running those springs!

Can I ask why you went with the 896's instead of the 895's? Was it in anticipation of carrying a bunch of weight or a bumper or something?

Because I'm an idiot?

I would like to think I am eventually going to get a rear bumper. And the sales guy convinced me that is what he was running on his rig (old taco) and it rode smooth; I can't even imagine what his ride is like in a truck with no weight in the rear. I tried to swap with them on a future install but since have stopped going to that shop. It was an amateur error.

:pop2: lets stop messing around here and mount them and get some pictures up...

also curious to see if you are going to mount that center then put 1 of the 6in rigids on both sides to fill the space... or if that one light is enough to blind lizards and snakes on the trails from miles away...
(((I understand the need for visibility on the trails at night but try to be respectful of the lizards and snakes and cute fluffy squirrels bro)))
